Apple's iPhone going steady, but will it bear on?

The 2009 was a good year for Apple. Their tough guy iPhone, which many big names in the industry contrived to defeat, is the reason behind this. Figures released by mobile advertising company Admob suggest that the smartphone from Apple has recorded significant growth in most of the major markets the world over.

According to a release from Admob, the US constitutes 50% of the global user base of iPhone and iPod, followed by Japan which constitutes 17% of the global user base.

Another significant aspect of the study that looked at data from January to November 2009 is that, it found out that Japan saw a mammoth 350% increase in 2009. France occupied the third spot, which also recorded a three-time growth for the same time period. Admob's study also pointed out that the number of iPhone OS users outside the US also increased, reaching 50% from 39%. Furthermore, it found that there were over 18 million iPhones in the market currently.

Though these figures may not be completely accurate (as they are from Admob's own network) they make it clear that the iPhone is going steady. But whether the same can be said the same time next year is doubtful. For Google's Nexus One is on it's way and Apple is probably waiting with bated breath. Google has reportedly talked with mobile phone operators like T-Mobile and Vodafone and is testing its first own-branded phone internally using its employees, a process dubbed 'dogfooding'.

Market experts are however divided whether Google's Nexus One will make a headway into the mobile phone market. Research and advisory firm Gartner is of the opinion that Google is not set to market its own-branded smartphone and will rather refine the Android OS with feedback form its employees. But there are others in the market who rumour that Google will launch the Nexus One in the US on January 5 next year for $199 on T-Mobile. Talks about 'Google Phones' have long been buzzing around in market, the latest of which is: 'Will Google's Nexus One take over Apple's iPhone?', the answer for which rests on the big daddy of internet.
