While most women between 18 and 45 engage in sex for pleasure, love and commitment, women ages 31-45 also have sex for stress reduction, revenge, mate guarding and other motives, according to a study in the December 2009 Journal of Sexual Medicine. Women’s sexual motivations were studied in more than 1,000 participants. In the study, results showed across the board that the “pleasure principle” ranked as the No. 1 reason for sexual activity, followed by love and commitment.
The results concluded that women age 31-45 have more motives for sex than do women age 18-30. Data from the study suggest some of the more popular motives for women over age 30 are stress reduction, physical desirability, experience seeking, resources, social status, revenge, expression, self-esteem boost, and mate guarding.
Another factor is that women age 31-45 are more likely to be married. This makes them more likely to have multiple motives to participate in sex.
“Sexual motivations vary across the board for women of different age groups; however, this study shows that primary sexual motivations center around pleasure for sexually active women of all ages,” said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine and director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital.
There are many factors that can influence a woman’s desire to have sex. Circumstances such as relationship status, career demands and past sexual experiences can be influential on sexual activity. Pleasure is the most popular reason, placing at the top two reasons for every woman that participated in the survey.
Over the course of time, women’s primary motivational factors for sex stay the same. It’s the smaller, circumstantial issues that tend to alter a woman’s desire for sexual activity.
