Major airports in Canada will have the full body scanners in place withing two months. This is the news reported by the top Canadian news media companies today. Body scanners should be installed in eleven of the country's top airpots within two months. Ottawa should make the announcement this afternoon.
Each of the full body scanners costs $200,000 dollars. They will be installed at airports in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Halifax, among others.
This decision would meet the desire of U.S. authorities who want to tighten the security measures for flights to the United States. The strict security measures in the United States follow the failed plot attempt on December 25 on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
The United States, Great Britain and the Netherlands have already announced their willingness to increase the number of appliances in their airports.
The full body scanners, however, raise a storm of protest. Several groups have raise very serious privacy issues. These types of scanners can see through clothing. However, the question is do you want privacy or security?
According to the Canadian press, which refers to an airport security insider, a total of 45 full body scanners will be installed in Canadian airports. This will make the total cost of these body scanners on Canadian taxpayers at 9 million dollars.
Canadian privacy commissioner has said that there will be a public education campaign to prepare the public for the full body scans. He also said that the minors and children will only be full body scanned with the consent of their parents.
