Some say Google's Nexus One will shadow iPhone. Others disagree. While Google is showing its teeth at Apple's iPhone the real competition in the smartphone market between these two is for the market share of mobile internet traffic.
With the launch of its Nexus One smartphone, Google hopes that its Android platform may snatch the leadership that Apple's iPhone has in the mobile internet market. This segment last year grew 148 percent worldwide. This is in terms of pageviews, according to Quantcast Mobile Trends.
In addition to this, the mobile internet has great potential for growth. It only accounts for 1.26% of global web traffic.
In any event, this report by Quantcast Mobile Trends, makes clear that Apple devices (iPhone and iPod Touch) maintain leadership in all regions of the world except Africa.
For example, in America the Apple has a market share of 65% in mobile internet traffic. This is well above the 12.4 percent recorded by Google's Android and 8.7% achieved by the Blackberry Research in Motion (RIM). Out of this 65 percent market share in America, 41 percent comes from iPhone and 24 percent comes from iPod Touch. The later has maintained a strong growth despite the fact that it only connects via wireless networks.
In Europe, according Quantcast Mobile Trends, Apple controls 45.8% of the mobile internet marketshare. This is up from previous year's 41.8%.
In Asia, Apple's has a better position, rising to 27.1 percent. This surpasses Symbian's 28.7%. In Oceania and South America Apple's iPhone extends its leadership in mobile internet market share, reaching to 73.2% and 68.8% respectively.
It's only in Africa where Steve Jobs' company is not leading and settling for the third place. It has 16.7 percent marketshare of all the African mobile internet users. Perhaps this is a good starting point for Google's Nexus One among other top market regions to get mobile internet market share. This is where the real competition will be, considering the growth of mobile internet usage in terms of pageviews.
