
The year 2010 is the year of Census. Local offices for the US Census Bureau will open in various parts of the United States to facilitate the successful conduct of the population count. One will soon open in Hickory, NC. It will bring 1,400 temporary jobs in Hickory area.
The Mayor of Hickory, NC Rudy Wright and other dignitaries will formally kick off the 2010 Census in Hickory and seven surrounding counties - Alexander, Alleghany, Catawba, Iredell, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin - at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Hickory Local Census Office. The Hickory High School ROTC will present The Colors; Jennie Whitley, Hydeia Steed and Ariel Thompson will provide music.
The event is only for invited guests. It's not open for the public as the office can't accommodate large amount of people.
The local census office opening in Hickory brings about 1,400 temporary job opportunities to the Hickory area, a fact recently noted by Gov. Bev Perdue in announcing the formation of a N.C. 2010 Census Complete Count Committee.
Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at noon. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, reception and office tour is scheduled at end of 1-hour program on Wednesday, Jan. 20. The opening will take place at 1273 16th St. NE, in Sandy Ridge Plaza.
Hickory Mayor Wright will deliver keynote remarks; William W. Hatcher, regional director, U.S. Census Bureau, also will speak. Guests include the mayors of Brookfield, Catawba, Claremont, Elkin, Jonesville, Maiden and Mooresville, as well as other local elected officials and community leaders.
