Yesterday the president of Bolivia Evo Morales put ten women in the cabinet to run the country making it the first country in the world that has gender parity. It's not a dream come true in Bolivia, but a mandate by the new Constitution.
Morales, took his second five year turn as the President of Bolivia and renewed more than half of its cabinet.
"The presence of 50% of women ministers in the cabinet, I would say, is a tribute to my mother, my sister and my daughter," Morales said amid applause from his supporters. He spoke of his dream about the battle to incorporate not only the social struggle of women, but also the political struggle for justice. He spoke of the importance of men and women that complement each other, as mandated by the Andean culture.
Women in the new cabinet of Bolivia hold the portfolios of Justice, Anti Corruption, Production, Rural Development and Health ministries.
There is also a significant presence of women in the legislature of Bolivia. The gender parity is required in the candidate lists. In fact, the Senate president is a women. The post is the 3rd important post in the country. Ana Maria Romero de Campero, a former journalist, holds the post.
