Yesterday the president of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan made an announcement at NATO headquarters that was slipped of the media attention. At least the newspapers in Azerbaijan did not even notice it, but the announcement shows how correct Armenia has stood against Azerbaijan's regular war-starting threats.
Asked about the state of the Armenian Armed forces the president said that the Armenian Army has weapons that other bigger countries would dreamed of. "The Armenian army has types of ammunition that countries ten times the size of Armenia would dream of having. The professional capacity of our officers is well known to our colleagues in the West and in the East when we engage in joint operations or drills," president Sargsyan said to a reporter during the joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
The question was referring to the model of the Armenian armed forces. Armenia is a CSTO memeber country. However, the country also cooperate with NATO, implementing the Individual Partnership Action Plan. "What is the model of the Armenian army currently, after all of this," asked the reporter.
Sargsyan responded that the Armenian Army is of victorious model and is well organized as an institution capable of combat. The he went on emphasizing of having types of weapons and amunions in its arsenal that many countries 10-20 times bigger than Armenia would dream of heaving.
This was a clear message to Azerbaijan who while negotiating with Armenia on the status of Nagorno Karabakh with one hand, with the other hand does not miss an opportunity that it will start a war again if the negotiations fail trying to put pressure and the factor of fear on the negotiation process.
Azerbaijan started the war in Nagorno Karabakh and lost. After losing seven regions from there they were bombing the cities of Nagorno Karabakh Azerbaijan's former president Heidar Alievy - the current presiden's father - signed a cease fire agreement, which is holding to this day.
Last week the authorities of Nagorno Karabakh's Republic hold general elections, which gathered more than 100 international observers. Azerbaijan declared all of these observers, including Russian State Duma parliamentarians and a Slovakian MP as Persona Non Grata in Azerbaijan.
The European Union and some other countries did not recognize the elections. However, no one offered any alternatives of how the region should be governed.
The Minsk Group, which mediates the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan and is comprised of the United States, France and Russia, said they "understand" the need to make democratic elections to organize the life of the Nagorno Karabakh population.
Armenia and Azerbaijan still negotiate. Azerbaijan speaks of the liberation of those 7 regions as a way to remove the consquences of the conflict. Armenia says don't start with the symptoms, but deal with the problem, which is the cause and the root of the problem. It is the status of Nagorno Karabakh Republic, which has gained de facto independence since 1988 and has built all the necessary institutions of a democratic republic.
