Asheville to Run Cupcake Contest to Support Cancer Cause

Cupcake for Cancer Cure Contest

Cupcake loving, cancer fighting citizens of Asheville, NC continue contest to find the best cupcakes and support the American Cancer Society's efforts to find cures for cancer.

Asheville’s annual cupcake contest is back, with a fresh look for 2012. Bakers, judges, and a hungry crowd will gather on April 21st at the Grove Park Inn for the third annual cupcake contest. Formerly called “Cupcakes for Cures,” the volunteers who founded the event have renamed it “Cupcakes vs Cancer” but are staying true to the original purpose: to support the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer while celebrating Asheville’s extraordinary food culture. Prizes and titles will be awarded in categories old and new, such as Best Cocktail & Beer Inspired Cupcake, Best Local Foods Cupcake, and Best Cancer Awareness Cupcake.

The success of the first two annual events has inspired the organizers to keep the event format similar to last year, but with a larger event space donated by the leading sponsor, the Grove Park Inn. This year participants will have more time to enjoy the sights and tastes of a ballroom full of thousands of cupcakes from over a hundred professional and amateur contestants.

Professional bakers, amateur bakers, and high school and middle school youth bakers will compete for bragging rights and prizes, all while raising funds to find cures for cancer. Prizes will be awarded for the overall best cupcake and in each category.

Bakers can enter multiple culinary creations in true Asheville categories. The adult categories are Best Cocktail & Beer Inspired, Best Cancer Awareness Cupcake, Best Filled Cupcake, Best Local Foods Cupcake, Best Retro Cupcake, Best Special Occasion Cupcake, and Best Vegan Foods Cupcake. The high school and middle school youth categories are Best Around the World Cupcake, Best Birthday Cupcake, Best Cancer Awareness Cupcake, Best Special Occasion Cupcake, and Best Through the Ages Cupcake.

Bakers should visit www.cupcakesvscancer.org to learn more about the categories and enter. The deadline for entries is midnight on Friday, April 6. Bakeries registered by Friday, March 30 will be featured on the official 2012 event poster. Registration donations are $50/ professional cupcake entry, $30/amateur cupcake entry and $15/youth cupcake entry.

Cupcakes vs Cancer is a cupcake lover’s dream: a room filled with scrumptious culinary creations that all fit in the palm of your hand. Event tickets can be reserved for a $25 suggested donation online at Cupcakesvscancer.org and will also be available at the door. Registered bakers and those who reserve their tickets online can gain early entrance to the event and be among the first to see and taste this year’s cupcakes. Want to take your experience to a new level? For a $100 donation you can judge an entire category. Details are online.

Cupcakes vs Cancer is raising money to support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to find cures for cancer because it is projected that in 2012 over 1,000 Ashevilleans will hear the words, “you have cancer.” The event was started by two couples in Asheville as their Relay for Life team. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs in the fight against cancer. It represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Participants are also invited to the Relay For Life of Asheville on June 15 at Reynolds High School.
