Energy Is What Makes Tanning Salons Dangerous

By now many have already heard about the Wednesday's breaking news concerning tanning beds how how they definitely increase the skin cancer risks by 75 percent.

Dr. Neal Schultz sheds some more light in a new DermTV video and says that it's the energy from the tanning bed lights that you don't see and feel, that makes it so dangerous to your skin and yourhealth.

Wednesday Lancet Oncology, a leading medical journal, stated, "The risk of skin melanoma is increased by 75% when use of tanning devices starts before 30 years of age." While the medical community has known that tanning salons cause skin cancer (the most common form of cancer), there is now finally proof.

Despite these risks, millions of people are using tanning beds. In the United States there are nearly 25,000 tanning salons. They serve an estimated 30 million people nationwide.

Many teenagers use the tanning salons because they think they are not vulnerable to health risks due to young age. This is not correct. On Wednesday morning CBS's Katie Couric told the story of Paige Wood, who is battling Melanoma Cancer. She has been going to tanning salons when she was 18 years old. Now at she is 27 years old.

I found this video to be very helpful because it clearly explains why tanning beds and salons are so dangerous. Many probably don't know about the risks that the energy from those lights has on your skin. I liked what I heard from Good Morning America yesterday morning. It used the word "smoking" when referring on the effect of tanning your skin. It's like smoking your skin.
