There are more names on the list of the European Union's top jobs than the posts themselves, says Cecilia Malmstrom: the Swedish European Affairs Minister. Her country is closing in on choosing the first ever European President and the Foreign Minister for the Union.
One of the top candidates for the post of EU President Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy has strong opposition to Turkey's EU membership. He believes Turkey would threaten Europe's 'Christian values.' "Turkey is not a part of Europe and will never be part of Europe," Mr Van Rompuy said during a meeting of the Council of Europe on the subject of Turkey's possible entry into the EU, held in the Belgian parliament on December, 2004.
The top posts of European President and Foreign Affairs are expected to be filled tomorrow. It may be that one of the posts may be filled by a woman. In fact, there is pressure mounting on the European leaders to allow a woman candidate to fill one of the top posts. "Earlier, several female MEPs gathered with protesters outside the European Council in Brussels calling for an end to the male stranglehold on the bloc’s institutions," reports Euronews.
