The Jewish community celebrate tonight the the New Year, the year 5771. The prayers are multiplying in the synagogues and the dishes are prepared in family homes. The festival, also known as Rosh Hashanah, will last two nights and will continue , in ten days with Yom Kippur.
The origin of Jewish New Year is the creation of the world.
Rosh Hashanah 2010 is the anniversary of the creation of the world. The Jewish calendar adds to the Christian calendar another 3760 years. That is to say that the Jewish community will celebrate this evening the year 5771.
In addition, the Jewish calendar is based on the lunar cycle. Each of the twelve months of the Jewish year lasts 28 days. However, every two years the New Year always falls in early September. The news add the thirteenth month called Adar.
In Israel the New Year celebrations last one day. however, in diaspora, for example in France the 2010 Rosh Hashanah celebrations will last two days. It will start this evening and last until Friday. The Jewish celebration is similar to the Christian celebration. There is the family meal. The dishes are prepared and prayers said. In some places big parties are organized in local synagogues.
Ten days after Rosh Hashanah, there is the feast of Atonement , also known as Yom Kippur. These days are also called "Ten Days of Awe." The month of September is called Tishri and ends with the Feast of Kabbalah, the Sukkot.
Happy New Year to our Jewish friends. Indeed it is better to celebrate each other and learn about each other than to burn each others' Holy Books.
