President Barack Obama yesterday expressed his dissatisfaction about the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court calling it a "handed" victory to special corporate interest groups. He said "this ruling strikes to our democracy itself."
These are very serious and worrying words from the U.S. President about the democracy in the United States. Is the Democracy weakened here? European are concerned too.
Yesterday the director of the OSCE (The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), Ambassador Janez Lenarcic, expressed his concern about Thursday's ruling by the United States Supreme Court effectively lifting limits for election spending by corporations and unions.
Lenarcic said that in democratic countries elections are meant all candidates and the people without a lot of money a fair chance and voice. He said this ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court "may affect both principles, in that it threatens to further marginalize candidates without strong financial backing or extensive personal resources, thereby in effect narrowing the political arena."
The opposite view says this a free speech protection in America. Ken Klukowski, for example, writes in Fox News that "every American should be worried when the president of the United States starts threatening the highest court in the land."
Therefore, here are two opposite views. Where is the distinction between free speech and fairness, free speech motivated with dollars and equal voice for the masses.
