May 25th is known all over the world as Geek Pride Day. Once a year since 2006, geeks all over the world wear their geek flag proud and proclaim to the world they have pride in being a geek!
Geek Pride Day started on May 25th of 2006 in celebration of the original release date of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. It also coincides with Towel Day from the ever-popular Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "trilogy", which is actually a series of five books, by Douglas Adams. However there have been unofficial celebrations as early as 1998 at the Geek Pride Festival in Albany, New York.
In 2006, Geek Pride Day was recognized and celebrated internationally thanks to a large amount of publicity on the Internet, as well as some media attention in Spain. Most notable of this media attention is 25 de Mayo: El Dia del Orgullo Friki, or May 25th: Geek Pride Day, by David Ramos of 20 Minutos.
The activities that typically take place during Geek Pride Day typically consist of geeks the world over dressing up in costumes, playing their favorite role-playing game, or spending some quality time with their favorite game console.
Being a geek is no easy task to undertake. There are certain rights and responsibilities every geek must pertain to, which I will outline below.
RIGHTS
- The right to be even geekier.
- The right to not leave your house.
- The right to not like football or any other sport.
- The right to associate with other nerds.
- The right to have few friends (or none at all).
- The right to have as many geeky friends as you want.
- The right to be out of style.
- The right to be overweight and short-sighted.
- The right to show off your geekiness.
- The right to take over the world.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Be a geek, no matter what.
- Try to be nerdier than anyone else.
- If there is a discussion about something geeky, you must give your opinion.
- To save and protect all geeky material.
- Do everything you can to show off geeky stuff as a "museum of geekiness."
- Don't be a generalized geek. You must specialize in something.
- Attend every nerdy movie on opening night and buy every geeky book before anyone else.
- Wait in line on every opening night. If you can go in costume or at least with a related T-shirt, all the better.
- Never throw away anything related to geekdom.
- Try to take over the world!
Whether you consider yourself a geek, dork, or even a nerd, today is your day to shine! Wear your geek flag proud for all around you to see and celebrate Geek Pride Day with all the gusto you can gather!
