Google announced today all the latest bells and whistles of their newest Android-powered phone, a Verizon Wireless exclusive, the Droid X. The company announced the release date and the price. With all the features of the prior Droid, plus a whole lot more, the Droid X will no doubt be the center of the Android world for several months to come.
CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, started off the Droid X event by stating that Google wants to create more than just a phone. They want to introduce more of an “Ecosystem,” a phone with a strong processor, network , and software platform that is all backed by a powerful operating system.
Google believes the mobile phone will soon be one of the main ways many people do their computing and states that the merging of computing and mobile technology is, “Making this device much more personal and much more appealing.”
The Droid X will be one of the most powerful mobile phones on the market once it is released. The specs of the phone are as follows:
- 8MP camera
- Texas Instruments 1Ghz processor
- 8GB of built-in memory
- 16GB Micro SD card included, with compatibility up to 32GB
- 4.3 inch display with 854x480 display of 400,000 pixels
- SWYPE preloaded
- Multi-touch keyboard
- WiFi hotspot for up to 5 devices
- Manufactured with no PVC, bromine, mercury or arsenic
- Improvements in security protocols, such as corporate directories and remote wipe
After Schmidt gave the scoop on the Droid X, Andy Ruben took the stage and talked about Froyo, or Android operating system version 2.2. Froyo source codes are now available, so app developers will be able to get their hands dirty and play with all the new features it offers.
The president of Adobe Systems then spoke on the integration of its products with the Droid X. He also reiterated that Flash 10.1 became available yesterday and is anxious to see how developers will put their latest to work.
The Droid X will be available starting July 15th for $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate. Verizon will have an unlimited data plan for $29.99 a month, and the optional add-on feature to use your Droid X as a WiFi hotspot for an extra $20 per month. Adding that feature will give users a 2GB cap of data usage.
Verizon is also offering the full upgrade price to any of their customers who are eligible for upgrade in 2010. For even more information on the Droid X and its release event, as well as some questions that were asked by attendees, check out Boy Genius Report.

#1 VZW confused marketing strategy
Apple just released the new iphone and Sprint has the Evo both are 4G. So to keep up Verizon has not one, but two iphone killers due out this month niether of which is 4G??? I just don't understand. I want to keep my Verizon service and need to upgrade to a smartphone but why should I fork over 200 clams for a phone that is yesterdays technology?
#2 NOT a 4G phone
The iPhone 4 is NOT a 4G phone. It is called the iPhone 4 because it is the 4th iteration of the iPhone. It is still running on AT&T's 3G network. In fact, AT&T has made no sort of announcement, or even hinted at one, of when (or if) their 4G network will arrive.
