For those predisposed to developing breast cancer, olive oil could do the trick in helping to protect against the disease and/or slow down the progress of tumor growth. Olive oil has been found in studies to put up a great fight against breast cancer. Olive oil is an antioxidant, monounsaturated fat that actually attack tumors, stops their growth and can protect DNA against harmful cancerous cells.
After much research, Spanish scientists have found that olive oil has properties that protect against breast cancer. According to the researchers from the Universitat Autonoma in Barcelona, olive oil has been said to, "Launch an attack on cancerous tumors, stopping their growth and driving the cells to implode, thus protecting DNA against potential damage from the cancer."
When tests were done on laboratory rats, they showed that olive oil halts a specific gene which is linked to tumor growth. It also stops proteins that cancerous cells rely on to survive. Researchers say; however, that only long term use of olive oil will show results in the decrease of cancerous cells in the breast.
A researcher, Dr Eduard Escrich, shared that people should make sure they consume 50ml of olive oil every day. He stated, "Even though caution must be exercised when applying experimental data to human breast cancer, our findings emphasize the importance that certain dietetic habits may have on cancer promotion." The Spanish researchers said that adding as little as 10 teaspoons of olive oil to one's daily diet could be what helps protect women against breast cancer.
Another study published in the journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), showed that olive oil "mounts a multi-pronged attack on cancer tumors, stunting their growth, driving their cells to implode and protecting against potentially cancerous damage to DNA." FASEB editor-in-chief Gerald Weissmann stated, “This study is ground-breaking because it shows that olive oil and a Mediterranean diet affect our bodies in a far more significant way than previously believed."
These findings also show that the benefits of a "Mediterranean diet" not only protect against breast cancer, but also major diseases like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The diet has been proven to help with asthma, allergies in children, diabetes, and depression. The "Mediterranean diet" is rich in healthy fats such as those in olive oil, high in fruit, vegetables, fish, nuts, and whole grains. The diet is also low in red meat and dairy products.
