Dog Saves Life of Child

It’s pretty common stuff, but always heartwarming. Man’s best friend saves his life, putting his own in jeopardy. That’s what happened to puppy Pinky in defense of his nine year old best friend (Denver News).

Richie, who also has a blood condition that makes clotting difficult, had no idea he had an allergy to bees. Somehow, when the first bee stung him on the foot, Pinky had a sixth-sense that something was seriously wrong according to the family. He knew he needed to get the bees away from Richie, so the boxer distracted them, luring the swarm away with him so Richie could get help from his grandmother. Pinky was stung forty times. The vet who treated him said the situation looked bad for the pup at the time, noting that boxers tend to be more allergic than other breeds anyway. He was unresponsive as the vet treated him, though Pinky did recover. Richie received hospital treatment too, but was stung only three times thanks to a measure of canine bravery made even more extraordinary in light of the fact that Pinky was only 18 weeks old at the time.

Dog heroes

The loyalty of dogs is well documented. For example, a chihuaha took a bite from a rattlesnake which was about to bite his owner’s one-year-old grandson recently. The dog survived thanks to his quick-thinking playmate (MSNBC).

The Times of India reported that a woman in Melbourne was saved from rape at knifepoint, sustaining minor injuries only from being dragged and kicked before her dog tried to bite the attacker, scaring him off.

Perhaps the most dramatic rescue came at the hands – or teeth and claws – of a black Labrador in California last year. During a hike in Cleveland National Forest his owners were attacked by a Mountain Lion. The five year old dog fought off the giant cat, sustaining many injuries himself but surviving for his owners to give him lots of love and thanks. His act of bravery is especially poignant since they had rescued him from a shelter in California.
