Some Fun Ideas for Labor Day Weekend 2010

When the last weekend before school begins people often scramble to get in one more dose of summer. Here are some ideas from throughout the U.S. this Labor Day long weekend.

Kansas

Train lovers cross the age divide, from 5 to 95. Give them what they want at Railfest September 4-6. The route starts in Baldwin and runs to Norwood, leaving at 11 am, 1 and 3pm aboard a locomotive, mail car and more. Cost is $10 per/adult, $5 ages 2-11. Call 913-721-1211 for more information.

Massachusetts

Speaking of trains, Carver, Massachusetts has something of a double whammy to offer families. Not only is this the location of Edaville amusement park; Edaville also plays host to Thomas the Tank Engine. September 3-6, 9am-5pm he stops by on a World Tour to celebrate his 65th Birthday. Tickets cost $18 and gain visitors admission to the park as well. Edaville highlights include a ball crawl, mini movie theatre and rides.

Brooklyn

Chiff reports that preparations are underway for their annual West Indies themed Labor Day Parade, September 6th. The route starts at Utica Avenue 11am, finishing at Grand Army Plaza. Individuals will wear their West Indian outfits and heritage with pride. Dance to Reggae and Calypso music.

Virginia

Stop by at Verizon Wireless American Music Fest September 3-5th for all kinds of music on Virginia Beach. Stages will be set up where acts will play everything from rock to R&B. Kids are welcome. Go to Virginia.org for details.

Pittsburgh

From September 3-6, Pittsburgh celebrates its Italian side with a festival in honor of one man’s beloved mother and their Italian background. Vendors will come out with food and crafts, classic cars will shine, and music will fill the streets. Acts include Donnie Iris, Chris Higbee (both music) and comedian Jimmy Krenn. Fireworks start at 10pm on Saturday. This is a free event and all are welcome.

St. Louis

State Fairs are a traditional part of Autumn and 88 years is a long standing tradition. The DuQuoin State Fair will run from September 5-6th plus enjoy two days of racing and three types of cars. Get tickets from Ticket Master or call 217-764-3200. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox welcomes everyone to a Greek Fest from the 4-6th, while Missouri Botanical Gardens hosts a Japanese Festival on those same days. You could travel the world in one city. Follow global experiences with a parade, held September 6th, starting 9am at the Soldiers Memorial and winding its way west on Market to 15th St.
