The retailer H&M has made David Beckham part of Super Bowl Sunday with the debut of a 30-second television ad introducing Beckham's underwear line.
Becks and H&M took the better part of 18 months, according to the international sports figure to complete the design of David Beckham Bodywear and the footballer is proud of what they created.
Until recently, David Beckham endorsed Emporio Armani underwear and appeared in its ads for the products. Now he gets to put his own name on his undergarments.
H&M has high hopes for the line of underwear as well and is putting its money where its hope is. Radaronline.com reported that the clothing retailer spent $3.5 million to put the television spot in the Super Bowl ad rotation, reportedly in the second quarter of the game.
Football fans should brace themselves for the black and white commercial that features Beckam's ripped physique, clad only in his skivvies as the camera pans up and down his tatooed body. His smile at the end of the spot can only be called self-satisfied. Video posted below.
David Beckham and his family chose to remain in the United States, rather than return to Europe for him to play soccer. His five year tenure in Los Angeles playing for the L.A. Galaxy of the MLS has stretched for an additional two years.
Announced in mid-January, the deal keeps Becks, wife Victoria and his four children in Los Angeles where they have grown comfortable. The footballer has taken advantage of all the city has to offer in the way of sports and he became a regular in courtside seats to watch the Los Angeles Lakers.
Now Becks says he's ready for some football of the American variety, played this Sunday in Indianapolis at Super Bowl XLVI. "“Like every fan, I'm looking forward to Super Bowl Sunday.”
The H&M underwear line takes Beckham further into the realm of his wife, who has her own design company and clothing. The Beckham Bodywear collection joins the athletes' men's clothing, cologne and shoe line.
CBS News in Los Angeles reported on Beckham's endorsement income which grew to almost $24 million in 2010, the last year for which figures were available. The largest of his sponsors, Adidas reportedly inked a lifetime deal with Becks, estimated to be in the neighborhood of $160 million. Image: Wikimedia Commons
