The winner of the rematch between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz will be picked by yet another octopus. This time it will take place in Las Vegas at the Giant Shark Reef Aquarium of the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
Golden Boy Promotions announced on Wednesday that an unnamed octopus who resides at the aquarium at Mandalay Bay will pick which "Juan" will be victorious on this Saturday night, July 31.
The great seer is a one year-old male octopus weighing in at 40 lbs. He has a reach of six feet and his tentacles are three feet long, according to a Golden Boy press release.
Perhaps encouraged by Paul, the octopus who became famous for correctly picking each match played at the 2010 World Cup by the German national team, the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino must hope for the same precision from its local resident.
The event will be for media only and will commence at 9:45 am PDT at the Giant Shark Reef Aquarium at the resort.
The Marquez vs. Diaz II bout is highly anticipated since the previous match between the two was named 2009 Fight of The Year by Ring Magazine.
It ended with Juan Manuel Marquez knocking out Juan Diaz in the eleventh round. Three belts are on the line Saturday night. Marquez currently holds the Ring Magazine, WBO and WBA lightweight belts. Diaz will be looking to regain the lightweight championship he lost to Marquez.
The fighters know each other very well and both agree that only minor adjustments might be necessary to secure a victory over the other. In the case of Diaz, he believes he went away from his trainer's game plan in the later rounds which led to the stoppage.
Many ringside observers thought that Marquez was losing the fight in the early to mid-rounds. Marquez won't admit that but has said that he will have to box more and use more finesse and movement to create angles in the ring.
Diaz has said in pre-fight press conferences that should he lose to Marquez again, he would consider stepping away from the sport for a while or forever.
He is a college graduate with a degree from the University of Houston. He is expected to take the Law School Admissions Test in a couple of months and intends to enter law school when his career is over.
