The N.Y. Giants' Steve Weatherford, the team's punter set his own record in Super Bowl 46 that helped his team to victory.
Eli Manning was named Super Bowl 46 MVP and is on his way to Disney World for a big parade on the day after the Giants 21-17 win over the New England Patriots. Watch the ad, "I'm going to Disney World."
But, the Elias Sports Bureau has listed other Giants players who could have qualified. In a record setting performance, six year NFL veteran Steve Weatherford punted his way into history.
Weatherford is the first Super Bowl punter to execute three kicks that pinned the opposing team inside their own 10 yard line. He could have had four, but a bad bounce carried it into the end zone before the Giants' coverage team could down it.
Steve Weatherford was an off-season signing by the Giants' GM Jerry Reese and was an after thought by most fans and media. He proved his worth on Sunday and two weeks earlier in the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.
The punter attended Illinois University and was a free agent signing by the New Orleans Saints in 2006. His previous two seasons in the NFL, prior to his signing by the Giants were played for the team's stadium-mate, N.Y. Jets.
In a Monday morning radio interview Weatherford spoke about the night of celebration by his team.
"I got about three hours sleep after I enjoyed the team party," he told the Dan Patrick radio program. "There were permanent smiles on the faces of everyone -- the players, our family and friends."
He credited his success to the execution of his mechanics. "It's all execution for me. I confer with my special teams coach about what direction to take and then go out and try my best to do what I'm supposed to."
When asked what it was like during the final minute of the game as the Patriots attempted to go the length of the field to score a touchdown, Weatherford stated the obvious.
"Everybody was hanging on to every movement made on the field. We enjoyed it because we believed our defensive backs would make the plays they had to...and they did."
It was Steve Weatherford's first Super Bowl but not his first time in the playoffs. ESPN noted that he was on the Saints team that lost the NFC game to the Bears five years ago and the Jets teams that lost the AFC title games each of the past two years.
