Revel in the gift of music at the Victoria Concert Hall on March 11 as musicians from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, led by the exciting Maestro Lev Markiz, bring you a performance of some of the most enchanting repertoire ever written for the chamber ensemble.
Giving a charming start to the concert is Elgar's elegiac Serenade for Strings, presented by the composer to his wife Alice on the occasion of their third wedding anniversary, and a work that remained one of his favourites throughout his life. Then listen out for the ringing of bells in Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, composed to mourn the death of Britten in 1976.
Britten himself composed his Simple Symphony based on eight themes which he wrote during his childhood and for which he had a particular fondness. Its four movements are suitably titled Boisterous Bourée, Playful Pizzicato, Sentimental Sarabande and Frolicsome Finale. The programme also features music by Gabrieli and Mozart.
Show your ticket at Victoria Café between 4-5pm to enjoy a free cup of coffee or tea and a slice of cake. -- www.sso.org.sg
