The young musicians who make up the Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Orchestra will experience the chance of a lifetime on Thursday, March 8 at 8 p.m. when they share the Orchestra Hall stage with two of classical music's most revered artists: the celebrated violinist Midori and the DSO's Music Director Emeritus Neeme Järvi.
Led by Maestro Järvi, the concert program features Midori as soloist in Max Bruch's Violin Concerto and will also include Richard Strauss' Don Juan. This special performance in Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center is open to the public and is also a featured concert of the American String Teacher's Association National Conference, which takes place in Detroit from March 7 to 10. Approximately 1,000 conference attendees from across the United States are expected to attend the performance.
Prior to their appearance with Midori and Maestro Järvi, the Civic Orchestra will perform the same concert program on Sunday, February 25 at 3 p.m. with DSO Principal Second Violinist Adam Stepniewski as soloist and Civic Orchestra conductor Rachel Lauber conducting. The concert will also take place in Orchestra Hall at The Max.
"It is a tremendous honor to have Midori and Maestro Järvi appear with our young people in the DSO's Civic Orchestra," said Charles Burke, DSO Director of Education. "Their participation in this very special concert is a testament to their belief in the tremendous talent and hard work of these young musicians. We are thrilled that string teachers from all over the country will be able to witness the high level at which these students are playing, and that they will also enjoy the incomparable artistry of Midori and Neeme Järvi in the brilliant acoustics of our home, Orchestra Hall. This will be a memorable event for all." -- www.detroitsymphony.com
