Egg Recall List Expanding: Salmonella infections linked to poultry eggs

Egg recall

What began in Wright County, near Galt, Iowa has quickly expanded nationwide and includes 228 million eggs. The CDC has been monitoring nationwide outbreaks of salmonella associated with shell eggs since May. At that time, they saw a trend beginning as the number of reported salmonella cases rose by a factor of four from what is considered normal.

Last week, Wright County Egg voluntarily communicated the initial shell egg recall list that have been linked to salmonella enteriditis outbreaks in locations within its distribution channels. Salmonella Enteriditis is one of three common strains of salmonella.

Egg recall list includes companies having received shell eggs that could possibly be tainted with salmonella and are located the following areas

• California, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin

From stores in these states, product included in the egg recall list could be distributed nationwide. The eggs involved in the recall list could be packaged in a variety of sizes from 6, 12/dozen, and 18 egg cartons. Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225, with plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946. These codes are normally found stamped on the end of the egg carton package. The following brand names have been identified by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to be included in the egg recall list:
• Albertson
• Bayview
• Boomsma/Dutch Farms
• Farm Fresh
• Glenview Farms
• Hillandale
• Kemps
• Lucerne
• Lund
• Mountain Dairy
• Nulaid
• Ralph’s
• Shoreland
• Sunshine
• Sun Valley
• Trafficanda

Additionally, be aware that some eggs have already been supplied to restaurants and some food services by US FoodService, Sysco, and Restaurant Depot.

If you believe you are sick from consuming eggs, symptoms to watch for include diarrhea, fever, cramps, nausea and vomiting and normally begin anywhere from 12 to 72 hours after consumption. The best advice to heed is to never eat raw eggs. Make sure all eggs are thoroughly cooked, whether at home or at a restaurant.

If you have purchased any eggs associated with the above brands and dates, the best approach is to return them to the store where they were purchased and you will receive a full refund.
