On Tuesday, February 13, Music Director Neal Gittleman and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra will present the DPO's 70th annual Young People's Concert, Kaleidoscope Around the World. The DPO specifically designed this concert for school-age audiences and planned it to link to Social Studies and Language Arts curriculum.
At 9:30 am and 11:15 am at the Schuster Center, the DPO will play music influenced by the traditional music of many of the different cultures in Europe. Since the 19th century, the traditional music of many different cultures has influenced orchestral music. Musicians and composers borrow from various cultures and fuse that music into their own style or culture. This concert will illustrate various folk music styles and will show how they have become a part of traditional orchestra music.
It's one of the DPO's longest-standing traditions. The DPO plans these concerts to integrate with classroom curriculum. Teachers receive a study guide and a CD of concert excerpts. Study guides are also available at http://www.daytonphilharmonic.com/content.jsp?articleId=639. At no charge, docents (if available) visit the various schools to prepare students for the concert. -- www.daytonphilharmonic.com
