“CJ Gun” depicts erotic artist CJ Bennett, who has been manipulated to look like a glass menagerie of erotics. Next to her, is a set of firearms, which the viewer has the opportunity to determine why they have been included. Are they meant to protect her? Just above her, are a set of jets.
“Burroughs would often position word and images in his art, which questioned all traditional theories of art itself,” William Lee explained. “ Burroughs' famous quote 'Everything Is Permitted' really sums up his artistic approach and mine as well."
William Lee's works include cut-ups, montage and collage of many different types of images, ranging in subject matter from Burroughs himself, war, Egyptian Religion, and now, erotics. In addition to his art, Lee employs Burroughs' artistic strategies in much of his music and writing as well.
“Besides the artistic nod to Burroughs, this work and others in the portfolio are well-honed expressions of digital media,” explained Ken Roth, a Cal State professor of digital media and media producer. “Each piece is a multi-layered pastiche, often creating the impression of an old master painted over an old master.”
