Alaska Airlines begins new flights between Portland and Dallas with an amazing price

Alaska Airlines is celebrating its new daily route from Portland to Dallas with a $129 airfare special.

But is the $129 round trip ticket a real travel discount? Indeed. Most flights from Dallas to Portland are $318 and up.

If the combination of Dallas and Portland sounds a little odd, consider that Portland is a really green area while Dallas is considered more of a gas and oil location. The cities are refreshing changes for athletes, corporate types and family vacationers.

Alaska Airlines was recently voted the most fuel-efficient airline in the world and travelers interested in climate change may be choosing Alaska airlines for future travels.

Alaska Airlines $129 plane ticket deals are good when purchased by Sept 19 for a 14 day advance purchase. The travel dates are good from Sept. 30 through Nov. 20, 2013.

To qualify for the price, customers must register at www.alaskaair.com prior to purchasing their first discounted qualifying flight.

Alaska Airlines has inaugurated service from Portland to seven other destinations since June 2012, including Atlanta, Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., the Hawaiian island of Kauai, Fairbanks, Alaska, Bozeman, Mont., Pasco, Wash., and Santa Barbara, Calif.

The new flight routes started today. The first flight bound for Dallas from Portland left at 10:15 a.m. this morning and arrives in Dallas at 4:04 pm. daily.

Flights leave Dallas at 5 pm. and arrive in Portland at 6:59 daily.

When tickets are purchased at least two and a half to three weeks in advance, typical airline prices between Portland and Dallas round trip can be as low as $313. Alaska Airlines discount is worth more than $70.

Alaska Airlines serves 95 cities through an "expansive network in Alaska, the Lower 48 Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. Alaska Airlines has ranked "Highest in Customer Satisfaction Among Traditional Network Carriers" in the J.D. Power and Associates North America Airline Satisfaction StudySM for six consecutive years from 2008 to 2013.

Alaska Airlines was recently named the most fuel efficient airline in the first efficiency study by the International Council on Clean Transportation.

The study found Alaska Airlines to be 26 percent more fuel-efficient than the least efficient airline (Allegiant Air). The study was released last week.

Air travel is considered the "fastest growing contributor to climate change" from the international transportation sector.

The technology of Alaska Airlines, its use of fuel-efficient engines and "up turned winglets installed on its newer jets" account for Alaska's most fuel-efficient ranking.

Other factors include seat density and the percentage of seats filled (LATIMES). Alaska Airlines also has fewer short haul trips--short flights' takeoffs and landings require more fuel.
