Funny Girl Barbra Streisand isn’t joking about heart disease education and research. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, but has been overshadowed by breast cancer research awareness campaigns.
Streisand has launched a ten million dollar fundraising campaign via internet. Streisand says she’ll personally match the first $5 million in donations. The money goes to The Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles.
Even though the Women’s Heart Center is one of the leaders in advancing heart care, Streisand said, “shockingly, we are 50 years behind on the research since up until recently women have been treated based on tests and diagnostic done mostly on men,” she said.
That factor has resulted in a higher heart disease morbidity rate in women than in men. With funding in research and education, scientists can learn the variances in the causes and factors of heart disease in women versus men.
“I am reaching out to everyone to donate whatever they can, no matter how small, because heart disease takes the lives of more women than all cancers combined,” Streisand said. “If you have a woman in your life that you care about-a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, please join me in helping this important campaign get off to a great start,” Streisand said.

Heart disease is a leading cause of disability in women because two-thirds of women who have a heart attack are unable to fully recover.
Prevention--healthy non-smoking lifestyle, plenty of fruits, vegetables and exercise--is important in the fight against heart disease, but with more research and study, prevention methods geared specifically to women will help reduce coronary related deaths.
