Dell and Goodwill partnership recycles used computers

Dell is asking all of North America if they're willing to recycle old pc's this New Year. Today Dell asked, "Did you get a new computer for Christmas?"

For many, the answer is yes. Whether their new pc came in the form of a laptop, iPad, tablet or an iPhone, computers were high on the list of holiday presents. Many daily pc users replace their machines every 3 to 4 years and often the replacements are in sync with Windows upgrades.

Which leaves a number of dinosaur computers hanging around. Dell Computers hooked up with Goodwill Industries to form the Dell Reconnect computer recycling program. Recycling creates jobs and positively impacts the environment. Since 2004, Dell says they've "kept over 190 million pounds of e-waste out of landfills. That’s the equivalent of over 38 million Inspiron™ laptops — one for almost everyone in the state of California."

Dell reports that its recycling program has created over 250 green jobs. "It’s an entrepreneurial and innovative program that helps you protect the environment and is a key part of Goodwill’s mission to provide education, training and career services to those with economic challenges," Dell says.

Participating in the Dell Reconnect partnership with Goodwill and recycle old computers, Dell's laid out the routine. Simply take your equipment, any brand in any condition, to one of Goodwill’s over 2,200 participating locations in the United States or Canada, and we’ll make sure your system and accessories are refurbished or recycled responsibly. We even accept Microsoft®, Xbox 360®, Zune® systems and accessories.

Dell's collaboration with Goodwill was formed in the spirit of the organization--to improve lives. Computers donated to Goodwill in working condition will be refurbished and resold at Goodwill locations. As most of today's jobs and employment applications are online, affordable computers are a pathway to new careers for people that Goodwill serves.

Systems that are irreparably damaged are "recycled responsibly," Dell says. Responsible recycling meets Dell’s policy against e-waste, which Dell announced is among the strictest in the industry. Dell promises that no environmentally sensitive materials will be sent to landfills and no items will be exported to developing countries in its recycling program.
