In Kandahar, a remote controlled device hidden on a motorcycle exploded Wednesday morning and killed one of Afghanistan's religious leaders.
The bombing was a deliberate attack on Mohammad Hassan Taimuri. Taimuri coordinated pilgrimages to Mecca and Medina. A second person died, and a third was wounded in the attack that occurred as Taimuri left his office.
No explanation why Muslim pilgrimage coordinator is targeted
There are only speculations, but no definite reasons why Taimuri was targeted. There is possibility the Taliban’s extremist positions may have gone so far as to target Taimuri simply because he worked with the government. However, local citizens reject such theories.
Kandahar is a dangerous and violent place right now because the American and alliance focus to crush uprising and rebellion fuels ire of Islam’s most unyielding followers. Retired and working government officials have been assassinated almost daily in the past month.
Residents believe local authorities have failed to secure the city. Some residents say the government prefers to blame the lawlessness on the Taliban in the effort to mask its own ineffectiveness.
More American troops have arrived in Afghanistan in recent weeks and consequently, NATO officials believe that spike in U.S. military presence is a factor in the high death toll of American soldiers last month. Currently, there are almost 100,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan.
There are no plans to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan until next July. Overall, there are 140,000 alliance force troops, including soldiers from the UK, stationed in Iraq.
