Seal and Heidi Klum divorce dominates while 'PR All Stars' forgotten

Seal and Heidi Klum are dominating headlines with such ferocity, that Project Runway All Stars has become a forgotten sideshow.

Remember Project Runway All Stars? The Lifetime series that aired shortly after Anya won the regular season? And just before the Heidi Klum Seal divorce announcement?

Back, way back when it was announced there’d be an All Star season, Heidi Klum announced she was “out.” The All Stars season would be taped during her and soon to be ex-hubby’s vacation time (pictured). Because of scheduling conflicts, Heidi couldn't do the show. Consequently, neither could Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia or Michael Kors.

So, Seal and Heidi had vacation, returned, and then filed for divorce. And while the internet is buzz with rumors that Seal’s out partying a lot and that his temper’s pretty darned explosive, it’s hard to imagine what Heidi Klum is like while her baby, “Project Runway,” is rolling along without her.

Can't imagine that's real pretty. Heidi's all about Project Runway.

In the beginning, before the Seal and Heidi split and before Austin Scarlett’s awful gold dress beat out Anthony’s white gown and Michael’s black gown, Project Runway All Stars seemed like a good idea.

Isaac Mizrahi seemed like a fun, more serious replacement designer for Michael Kors. Joanna Cole was a stern enough replacement for the ever professorial Tim Gunn, and that model, the Heidi look alike, seemed good enough.

But it turns out that Tim, Heidi, Nina, and Michael are inimitable and irreplaceable. There’s nothing like a Heidi spat with Michael and Nina about taste and length. And whether a design is better because it’s fun versus elegantly sophisticated.

Those fashion disagreements are just not happening here on the All Stars program. And, perhaps, that is a tribute to the designers. They are all so good. And they are all really smart.

Last night’s challenge, for example, designers had 6 hours to design a dress. Almost each of the designers took a cue from the seamstress-less Anya Chee. Anya can’t sew. We saw that. So she made caftans and beachwear all season long.

Michael did the same last night and so did Mondo. Michael’s grapefruit gelato dress versus Mondo’s cantaloupe gelato was a big showdown. And Michael pulled it off. Two wins in a row for Michael the designer from two seasons ago who didn’t make it to the final runway and cried his heart out.

But the All Stars are only 4 challenges in. More than likely (okay, wait) Hopefully, the show will take a turn for the more challenging.

Once the judges get rid of the high fashion red carpet looks as challenge, viewing should become a lot more interesting. Then we'll see who can really hang.

Rami, Michael, Austin and Anthony are good for the high fashion and even the haute couture challenges. But what would Anthony and Michael do for the urban Manhattanite who hails cabs and occasionally forays on subways?

Mila and the rest of the remaining female designers have a wider range than the strong male designers who exclusively produce high fashion gowns for women. Perhaps next week the designers will be issued a challenge so we can all see the range of designers and ideas flowing other than red carpet fashion.
