Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories in Cambridge, Massachusetts is developing a way for electric cars of the future to charge via mobile charging stations.
The group of researchers which expects electric cars to stream on to roads in the coming years wants to solve the issue of drivers fears of being stranded because of a dead battery, the scientist believes the solution to the battery issue is the use of portable charging stations. The Charging stations can be moved whenever the demand for recharging is needed, Of course there is the issue of where and when to place these stations.
In-car sensors will monitor electric car's battery charge level.
In order to solve the location issues the team of scientist would build in-car sensors. According to Newscientist magazine: "in-car sensors would monitor the level of charge in the battery and periodically report this to a central operations center, which would flag areas where most cars run low on juice. The stations can then be deployed wherever the low-charge "hotspots" are at that time. Just five mobile stations would be needed to cover 100 electric cars on a 100-kilometre stretch of highway".
A lot of questions remain but the technology looks promising, the team will present the idea at this years Vehicular Technology Conference which is being held in Ottawa, Canada, next week.
