They say it's never personal its just business, then that's how "partners" should take the news should Microsoft decide to make their own smartphone. Microsoft is in the processes of launching their new and desperately needed smartphone operating system Windows Phone 7 which is slated to be released this october according to rumors, and several launch "partners" was announced to be on board or are day?. Samsung which is said to be a major day one launch "partner" for WP7 may not be to sure about that anymore.
In an interview at this year's IFA electronics event head of marketing for Samsung YH Lee told Reuters: "We are prioritizing our Android platform. Android is very open and flexible, and there is a consumer demand for it." read between the lines, where is he getting at with
"Open and Flexible" and "there is a consumer demand for it" was there a consumer demand for Android before release? clearly a jab at WP7, he went on to put the nail in Microsoft's coffin:
"Samsung will introduce a smartphone running Microsoft's new Windows version later this year. "There is still some professional, specialized demand there," she said.
Why would Samsung all of a sudden have a change of heart about Windows Phone 7? well because jumping on the Android bandwagon has become very lucrative for the korean based manufacture, Samsung sold 1 million devices over seas in less than a month and another million here in the US. Samsung is not alone there's been a rumor that Dell which is a strong PC "partner" for Microsoft is said to be thinking about pulling out of the launch. With this kind of loyalty im sure these company would be very understanding if Microsoft decides to go the Apple route and Build their own Phone.
A smartphone is not a PC so no one can cry monopoly or antitrust. Clearly these company's who pays nothing for Android as far as licensing goes are spoiled and are being paid in some cases by Google via mobile search AD revenues. So the prospects of paying for an operating system doesn't look so tempting anymore. It's like a company outsourcing jobs to a country where the labor is cheaper, why pay you $20 dollars in hour here when i can pay some poor sucker next to nothing?
Did someone say ZunePhone?
Microsoft isn't a newbie in the Manufacturing business, they have the Xbox 360, they build countless PC peripherals and the Zune HD which is an award-winning multimedia device that competes against the iPod. That's where Microsoft should focus its strategy if they do decide to build their own smartphone, Windows Phone 7 as the software and the Zune HD incredible hardware or a completely new revamped version. I see this as a win win situation for Microsoft because no cares more about your products then you do, ask Apple.
