Save the Date: Strong Dogs Coming to the Big Bend!

You’ve heard of strongman competitions, now a Strong Dog competition is coming to the Big Bend of Texas.

Super Pull I: The 1st Annual Weight-Pull of the Big Bend will wow spectators on November 19 at 10 a.m. in Alpine, Texas.

One of the more popular events at dog shows is the weight pull, and this fall, Alpine will host its very first.

The 2011 edition of Art Walk, an annual affair, is scheduled for the evenings of November 18 and 19. People come from hundreds of miles around to sample the art, music, and food of the Big Bend. But with little precious to do on Saturday morning, out-of-towners and locals alike look for something to pass the time until the nighttime party begins again.

This year, they have the happy option of attending Super Pull I. Scheduled for Saturday morning at 10 a.m., the public can attend the first ever weight-pull in the Big Bend. Set for Kokernot Park under the covered pavilion, everyone is invited to enter their dog in the competition, or just to come out and cheer on the competitors. They can also buy their cup of morning coffee at the park.

Open to all breeds and all weight classes, each dog will harness up to pull as much weight as possible. These dogs, much loved by their owners/trainers love to pull to please the people in their lives, and that includes the spectators. Just as cheers spur on our favorite sports teams, these dogs respond to the encouragement of the crowd.

“Things can get really exciting,” organizer Julie Edwards says. “The dogs love it when people cheer them on. They get so excited.”

“We’ll apply AMCA (Alaska Malamute Club Association) rules and use a wheeled cart for the weights,” Edwards added.

Plans are still in the works for this event that promises to be fun for everyone. Edwards said that all proceeds will benefit the TAMR (Texas Alaskan Malamute Rescue), and more details will be coming soon.
