Right now the Berlin Film Festival is going on and it is showing movies of all kinds from around the world including one that is the directorial debut of Angelina Jolie, but if ticket sales are any indication there’s a more popular movie showing.
When a movie is shown at a film festival, the point is to try and generate as much buzz about each film as possible. When that movie is the first time a star has gone behind the camera to direct, that buzz is very important. For Angelina Jolie, her first directorial debut was to be a big deal at the Berlin Film Festival, but if ticket sales are any indication, a campy and bizarre sci-fi film about Nazis on the moon might be a bigger hit,
According to industry sources, the ticket sales at the festival for Jolie’s In the Land of Blood and Honey have sold moderately well. What movie, however, has been outselling and generating more talk and more discussion than her powerful, emotional and moving love story set against the Bosnian war? How about a silly movie about Nazis who have taken up residence on the moon in order to wait 70 years to wreak their revenge against humanity?
Already the buzz for Iron Sky has been huge. Just yesterday the trailer for the film began popping up on the internet. The movie appears to look like another alien invasion story at the start of the trailer, before it is revealed that the flying saucers and the fancy technology is actually that of World War II era Nazis who fled to the moon at the end of the war. While living underground on the dark side of the moon, the Nazis have gained strength and numbers and now plan to launch an all-out attack against humanity.
So far, at the Berlin Film Festival, Jolie’s movie is losing out to this film as far as tickets are concerned. Even so, with ticket sales for "Iron Sky" as strong as they have been, it is still not the number one film at the festival. No, that honor has gone to the Bollywood movie Don 2: The King is Back.
Jolie’s movie has already been released in the United States. The reviews have generally been mixed. The film, however, was nominated for a few Golden Globe Awards, including a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. The movie did not win any Golden Globes, however. Critical reaction to the movie has been very mixed, with largely negative reviews.
