For fans of the X-Men, there are few characters as popular as that of Wolverine and his second solo movie, starring Hugh Jackman, now has a release date.
In the world of comic books, there are few stories and characters that have gained as much popularity as that of Wolverine. Originally, the character appeared in a comic book belonging to The Incredible Hulk, but gained in popularity when he was teamed up with the X-Men. Wolverine is a mutant with bones laced with unbreakable Adamantium, including claws that extend from his hands, superhuman senses and a superhuman healing ability. Now, the character is getting his second solo film.
According to Hollywood sources, fans of Wolverine can expect to see his next solo effort The Wolverine, to hit the big screen July 26, 2013. This one will be the sequel to his prior solo effort X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which came out in 2009. That movie was not well-received critically and many fans also did not have a positive reaction to it. However, the movie made money and the X-Men movie franchise has continued to make money.
When X-Men Origins: Wolverine came out it went on to earn $373 million worldwide. Despite the reviews and reception, that made the movie a certified hit. It seemed that a sequel was inevitable. In typical Hollywood fashion, however, the sequel was not an easy one to get moving.
Originally, critically-praised director Darren Aronofsky was attached to direct the film. The director has worked with Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine, in the movie The Fountain. However, Aronofsky dropped out of the project in March of 2011. Last summer it was announced that director James Mangold, who directed the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, was named to direct. He is still listed as the director.
For plot-hungry fans looking for clues as to what Wolverine will be up to next, there is very little to tell. It is rumored that the sequel may take place in Japan and contain many Japanese characters. In the comic books, Wolverine did spend time in Japan and was even engaged to marry a Japanese woman at one time.
Currently Jackman’s schedule is jammed. He is set to film a big-screen adaptation of Les Miserables, where he will play the lead character of Jean Valjean. Given this release date, it will likely mean that he will have to jump right from that role back into the one that made him famous. Les Miserables is scheduled to be released in 2012, on December 7.
