Movies new to DVD February 7, 2012

It’s time for movie fans to catch up on the movies that came out in 2011 and might have slipped by the average movie-goer and now there are new movies out this week.

This week, it looks like a relatively slow week as far as new DVDs go. There’s a historical drama about the plays of Shakespeare that’s directed by an action movie director. There is the latest movie in the series about two stoners who always get in trouble. And there is a documentary about scientists trying to raise a chimp as a human being that came out last summer.

Anonymous - Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, Ed Hogg, David Thewlis. Action summer blockbuster director Roland Emmerich decides to create a movie that looks into one of the most lasting conspiracy theories in existence. It asks the question: what if William Shakespeare was not the author of all of those plays? In this version, it is theorized that the real author was a member of the Royal Court and members of the Royal Court did not go into play-writing as a career. So, actor William Shakespeare is given credit for the plays and controversy and contention ensues. Rated PG-13.

A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas - John Cho, Kal Penn, Neil Patrick Harris. Everyone’s favorite stoners are back in this holiday themed movie. This time the movie takes place six years after the last movie and the two friends have grown apart in the meantime. As the two get prepared for their annual holiday celebrations the wrong package ends up at the wrong door. Given the past of the two main characters in this story, you can guess what the package contains. Before long hijinks of all kinds ensue as the two try to save the holidays for themselves and their families. Also, Neil Patrick Harris makes another of his hilarious appearances. Rated R.

Project Nim. A documentary from the same team that brought Man on a Wire a few years ago comes back with this moving documentary. This one follows a family who performs an experiment with a chimpanzee and trying tor raise it as a human being. Two scientists decide to take a chimp and raise it as if it were a human child. The study ended up providing incredible insight into human nature as well as animal nature. Rated PG-13.

Fireflies in the Garden - Ryan Reynolds, Julia Roberts, Emily Watson, Willem Dafoe. An all-star cast about a family in crisis. This one is about Ryan Reynolds, a university professor and a writer whose daughter is about to enter law school. On the day the family is introduced within the course of the movie, their patriarch, played by Julie Roberts, is graduating from college. Just then, a tragedy hits the family that threatens to rock them to their very core. Rated R.
