Prequel to Tarantino's Jackie Brown film is in the works

According to Hollywood sources, a prequel is in the works to one of the film adaptations that Quentin Tarantino made of an Elmore Leondard novel.

The original movie, Jackie Brown, starred Pam Greer, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro and Bridget Fonda. Now, the movie that is reportedly in the works follows the characters portrayed by Jackson and De Niro several years before the events in Jackie Brown.

According to Hollywood sources, the roles will be filled by different actors. In the role of Louis Gara, portrayed by De Niro in the Tarantino film, will be played by John Hawkes (Deadwood, Winter's Bone). The role of Ordell Robbie, portrayed by Jackson originally, will be taken over by Yaslin Bey (Dexter, The Italian Job).

The director of the film Dan Schechter took a chance and wrote the script on spec without first securing the rights from Leonard who created the characters for his book Rum Punch, which was adapted into Jackie Brown. Once Schechter created the script, it was sent over to Leonard. Leonard liked the script, approved it, and then signed on as an executive producer for the film.

Currently the film is known as Switch and details the story of Gara and Robbie as they kidnap the wife of a corrupt Detroit real estate developer. When the husband refuses to pay the ransom the two are forced to adapt their scheme. It's then that the wife teams up with the two crooks to exact revenge against her husband.

The movie is in the early stages of development and no release date has been set at this point. Hawkes scored an Academy Award nomination for his role in Winter's Bone. He also appeared in the movie Contagion, which was out in 2011 and Martha Macy May Marlene, which has earned him an nomination for a Spirit Award this year.

Yaslin Bey had key roles on the Showtime series Dexter and was in The Italian Job. He also had a key role in Something the Lord Made. He is sometimes credited under the name Mos Def.
