The volatile, but popular actor, may soon have a resume that reads insider informant, gladiator, Superman’s dad and vampire hunter.
The story has been a horror classic since Bram Stoker first wrote the words down and invented the entire vampire genre. For many, the story of the vampire known as Dracula is the basis of every vampire story since the book was first published. For some, it is a tale of eternal romance tinged with horror and the macabre. Now, New Zealand actor Russell Crowe may be in set to star in yet another re-imagining of Dracula.
According to industry sources, the new movie that is in development follows the story of the man sent to speak to Dracula, Johnathan Harker. Crowe is rumored to be in talks with the movie’s producers to star in a movie currently titled as Harker. In this version of the story, however, the character of Harker would not be a man working for a law office, but as a detective working for Scotland Yard.
The new version would take on Dracula more like a murder mystery than an outright horror story. In the Stoker version, Harker is a man sent to meet a mysterious count living in a castle in Transylvania. When Harker arrives, Dracula sees a portrait of Harker’s bride-to-be, Mina, and falls in love. Dracula then heads to England where he pursues Mina while terrorizing the populace.
In this version, Harker would be a man charged with investigating a series of murders taking place in England. It would then take place after Dracula has already made his trip from Transylvania. No word has been made of who might play the infamous vampire count or any of the other main characters. The story is set in the 1800s and would not be updated to modern times.
Right now, however, Crowe’s schedule is quite full. Recently, he was in the Naperville, Illinois, area filming the new version of the Superman story called Man of Steel. He was signed to play Jor El, Superman’s Kryptonian father.
Before that, Crowe is also in the Tom Hooper-helmed Les Miserables adaptation that is due out December 7 of 2012. Man of Steel is currently scheduled for a June of 2013 release. There are also rumors that he is considering taking a part in a film project by Darren Aronofksy about Noah and his ark. No further details about that film, including a release date, have been revealed.
