On Tuesday some residents of McHenry County near Chicago came across the grisly discovery of two human skulls and now experts say those skulls may have been out there for a while.
Exactly who the skulls belong to and how they got there remains a mystery to authorities. The skulls were found on Tuesday afternoon in the 1500 block of Cherry Valley Road in an area known as Bull Valley. This area is located between the Chicago suburbs of Woodstock and Crystal Lake. Those two communities are northwest of Chicago, about halfway between Chicago and nearby Rockford, IL.
According to media reports, authorities who had been notified about the discovery have now performed tests on the skulls. They are now saying that those two skulls were likely exposed to the elements, and left out in the wilderness, for quite some time by now. Because of this, the police are now planning to bring in an anthropologist on the case to try and learn more from the bones found.
As of right now, the police are saying that they do not believe the skulls are related to any open investigation that they have. The are unsure of how the skulls got there or if there is any kind of foul play involved. They also are not connecting these skulls to any missing persons case that they have going at the moment, either.
As of Wednesday morning, police were still looking in the field where the skulls were found. They were looking for any additional evidence as well as any additional bones or body parts. Images shown on local Chicago television showed crews in the area digging in holes beside the road, evidently looking for additional clues.
Authorities told the press that the anthropologist would be contacted to try and determine some key factors about whose skulls these may be. For example, the scientist might be able to determine the age, sex and relative size and weight of the person whose skull it was. The anthropologist might also have some idea of how the person whose skull it was died. Evidence of trauma that might not be as visible to the naked eye might be found when the anthropologist viewed the skull.
Police stress that there is no current evidence that there was any foul play involved. They also stress that there might be an explanation for why the skulls were there that is in no way related to any crime. Anyone with information, however, is encouraged to contact their local authorities, if they feel they can shed any light on the discovery.
