Design Professor Chosen For Craft Show Honor

Thomas Huang, assistant professor of industrial design in KU's Department of Design, was recently named as a 2007 American Craft Show Searchlight Artist. Huang joins fourteen other artists as a nominated Searchlight Artist, a category newly created by the American Craft Council to feature emerging artists.

As a result of this nomination, Huang has been juried into the American Craft Show in Baltimore, exhibiting his works for over 25,000 people. The chosen Searchlight Artists will be presented together in a special gallery section of the show, February 23-25, 2007, at the Baltimore Convention Center. Huang will exhibit his furniture and sculptures.

Nominations for Searchlight Artists were received by department chairs of prestigious schools teaching craft, past Council jurors and the editorial team of AMERICAN CRAFT, a magazine created by the Council.

"It's an honor to be chosen," said Huang. "I'm excited to help bring much deserved attention to our arts community."

The American Craft Council is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1943 by Aileen Osborn Webb to promote understanding and appreciation of contemporary American craft. It not only produces the bi-monthly magazine AMERICAN CRAFT, but also sponsors annual juried shows for artists and created the first annual leadership conference on craft in 2006. The American Craft Council also sponsors the Aileen Osborn Webb Awards honoring excellence in craft works, and holds workshops and seminars devoted to craft designs. -- www2.ku.edu
