Captain Elliott finished up strong on the Ramblin' Rose, but, for his crew, it was "Too little, too late."
Things are not looking good for another season with Captain Elliott on the Ramblin’ Rose.
“Too little, too late,” one of Captain Elliiott’s crew members said when they pulled up a “crabalanche” of crab, said Elliott, trying to be friendly and jovial with his crew.
There was a lot of negativity going on in the boat as the season came to a close. Captain Elliott managed, with all the ups and downs, to put 628,000 pounds of crab on the boat, worth 1.5 million dollars, bringing each crew member $49,000 each. Not such a bad amount, although the lowest amount made in the Deadliest Catch fleet. Regardless, the crew simply seemed to have had enough of Captain Elliott.
“This is probably the happiest I’ve been since I’ve been on this boat,” engineer Aaron Steiner said, “and that’s because it is almost over.”
“We’re all happy to be done with this season and have it in the past,” deckhand Nick Dryden said. “Not a real enjoyable one, but we made it.”
Captain Elliott's Rose-Colored Glasses
Much as he has been oblivious to his ex-girlfriend’s wish to have him just go away and leave her alone, Captain Elliott also seemed completely unwilling to admit that his crew, well, wants to just get away from him.
“Pretty good season altogether. … It’s the best fishing we’ve seen all year. Biggest boatload of crab, with four of my good friends. Feels pretty good.”
Is that how his crew felt?
“I’m just glad that this is the last day,” one man said.
Steiner said, “It just blows me away, how much more efficient other people are at catching the crab. His personal relationship is affecting my life and our lives.”
Dryden said, “I’m sick of being part of his little soap opera," Dryden said. “It’s hard to work for a guy and be his friend sometimes. ... He’s running out of friends.”
Even the skipper himself acknowledged his lack of efficiency on the whole, saying, “Amazing what you can do when you actually concentrate on fishing.”
His crew was not amused when he suggested, “Boy, aren’t we gonna make a bunch more money this trip!”
“Can’t really make up for the last six months on here,” Steiner said as he loaded up crab.
Tim “Cat” Lovins was plain with his assessment. “I’m definitely looking for a little more success than the Ramblin’ Rose.”
Whatever his crew was thinking, Captain Elliott seemed convinced he had done pretty good on the whole.
“Pretty good season altogether,” he said. “I think I’ve proved not just to myself but hopefully everybody else that I’m here to stay, I’m here to run a crab boat.”
Perhaps, but he was less convincing on After the Catch, where a montage of clips between Captain Elliott’s thoughts and the crews’ comments made for a hilarious reality check for the captain. When host Mike Rowe asked about his future, he was elusive regarding the Ramblin’ Rose, instead talking about getting his own crab boat, possibly with Aaron Steiner.
“He’s got pretty good credit and I’ve got the cash,” Captain Elliott said. “We talked about buying our own crab boat, maybe doing our own thing.”
Might be a good idea, especially considering this tweet to a fan by Captain Elliott following the show: "Man up what you mean homie!! im still gonna crab fish just not on DC! I'm tired being part of such a negative experience."
So, no more Captain Elliott on Deadliest Catch?
Could be, but it's early--hard to say what could happen between then and now.
Last night was the season finale of Deadliest Catch, but fans have more to look forward to with the Bering Sea’s favorite crab boat captains. Next Tuesday, Deadliest Catch: Revelations airs at 9 p.m. E/P on the Discovery Channel.
Stay tuned.

#1 Can only hope...
Can only hope that Elliot AND Keith are done. I cant stand either one. I also hate how many boats are on the show now, making it so we barely see much of any one boat. We saw less of the Northwestern this season than any other.
#2 Number of boats
You know, that is a good point, Karma; you're right about the "face time" issue; maybe they just won't add anyone else in Elliott's place, assuming he is gone. It *sounded* like, in the "After the Catch" discussion, that Keith might be hanging up his skipper hat for a manager's chair, and turning the wheelhouse over to Monty; I think that could be interesting to see.
#3 Keith isn't that bad
Keith isn't all that bad actually, he's just loud and has a temper problem - but he knows it. At least he's in your face about it - could say he needs to mellow out but the saying goes, can't teach an old dog new tricks. Elliot on the other hand... if there's ever been a time I wish I could telepathically strangle someone it'd be him. He's a selfish, egocentric, whiny entitled little boy with delusions of grandeur. And he made the fatal mistake of getting too chummy with his crew. Don't care what you do when you're off the boat, but on the boat, you're the captain, you're God, you're in charge - so act like it.
#4 Honestly i think elliot is a
Honestly i think elliot is a good captain but needs some help finding "crab". And i hope the seabrooke is't going to be shown on season 9 junior needs to shut the hell up about being a legend.
#5 elliot deadliest catch
Anyone going through a divorce knows full well home impacts their work life. So, i think people need to show compassion, here. On top of that it, all the captains supported the fact this was the worst fishing season ever. And the corker is the complete lack of respect given to this young captain. He's shown the motivation to become a captain, he just needs time and the experience that goes with it just like any young manager, teacher, etc. i wish him all the best.
#6 Have you...
watched every episode Elliot was on? This was his second season and he was just as bad in his first. He's a whiny, arrogant ass and while I wish him the best, I wish him the best somewhere other than DC.
Plus, the job is too dangerous to have a Captain have his mind not on the job. Elliot himself admits many times this season he wasnt there mentally. Also he isnt respected because he hasnt earned it. He totally disrespected his crew both seasons he was shown on the show.
#7 Divorce
He also wasn't married to the mother of his kids ... his "divorce" comment was another example of him creating his own "reality."
#8 Divorce comment
I don't care for Elliot at all and I don't think he has learned anything from the invaluable mentors that have been with him the last 2 years, however anyone who lives with a woman and has 2 children with her are as good as married. He probably has more reason to comment about what he is going through than a lawfully married man because his rights are not as much as a married father. I don't have to like him and don't respect him much either but he made sacrifices to see his kids and try to patch things up at risk to his security in Captaining the RR. The owner was clear, you leave the boat you loose your job. I wish more dads wanted their families that much.
#9 Perhaps, Paula
But, one would think that if it is the same, he would not try to make it sound better for his purposes by saying he had gotten/was getting divorced instead of that he broke up w/ his girlfriend. Oh, and the owner did make it clear, but that was not what he told Elliott; he told him that if the crew did not show back up when they were supposed to, Elliott would not have a job; he never said that if Elliott left the boat he would not have a job. I doubt it ever occurred to Elliott that the crew might not come back, tho'; lucky for him, they did.
#10 re: respect
I'm sorry, but respect in this situation should be automatic until all is lost. For the simple reason the guy is your boss. That does not mean you have to like the guy. The owner never bypassed elliot to talk to the crew. seems every boat has issues with whiny worker bees on deck and questioning the actions of the captain, even the very experienced ones. Don't forget that what we see is only a snippet to tell the best story. DC choose to focus on Elliot's personal life to show the toll fishing takes on relationships. it's not like any other captain didn't push their crews the same way. His one friend who jumped ship saw it want any different. Junior and Keith worked their crews harder than anyone, but didn't have an owner second guessing their decisions.
#11 In some states after 7 years
In some states after 7 years it is considered as Common Law Marriage. Not suire how Alaska works.
#12 Could be.
But, regardless, she was his "girlfriend" until it made him seem more sympathetic for him to be getting "divorced." It is just part of an ongoing pattern with Elliott, to interpret things as he wants them to be, not as they are (well, as much as things can be "as they are" on a reality television show, anyway; that is a whole other subject, however.).
#13 Married/divorced it really doesn't matter
I totally understand when saying that being with a woman so long and having 2 kids married or not it is very stressfully. I've been there also. However, when it comes down to your jon and others safety and livelihood. There should and will not be a margin of failure. Let's just put the drama away and face the facts. He is WAY too inexpeirenced and WAY too immature for the position that he holds. He has said that he has been on over 30 boats in his career. Doesn't that say enough. This career life is not ment for him nor is the industry willing too take on someone so young and cocky. There is times to be brutally honest and times to be politically correct. And he doesn't have the watch.
#14 Elliot
Move him over to Gold Rush with the other clueless idiots...
#15 Deadliest Catch
I hope Elliott isnt on Season 9 of the show....
#16 elliott
Amen!
#17 Elliotte
What are the "numbers" on Elliotte's hat?
#18 DC Season 9
Thinking that Elliot may not return for Season 9... but then, does anyone know ANYTHING about Season 9?
Will there even BE a 9th season?
(Gee, I reeeeeally hope so... ) :/
#19 Elliot the baby
Elliot is a TERRIBLE captain. All he 'proved' was that he is a spoiled baby with a huge unwarranted ego. Dude, you suck at crab fishing. Get real...homie. Lol. What a fag! Dude...you need to be on the 'Big Loser' not 'DC'. See you at the bar in the harbor.
#20 Elliot, mate
No prospecting?!?! 'A waste of time?!?!' Lol. Nice try Elliot. Blanks!!! No crab. that's what you get, ROOKIE!!! What a LOSER!!! Total turd. Season 7; episode 11. Such a piece of turd. So lame. Glad I don't own that boat. What a waste of money having that loser as the captain.
