Jungle Gold season finale leaves fans wondering, "Is this show fake?"

After watching George and Scott being held up on Discovery Channel's hit series Jungle Gold, fans are asking more loudly than ever, "Is this show even real?"

After a desperate attempt to make some quick cash, Jungle Gold stars George and Scott found themselves more broke than ever and back in Utah—and fans are asking, “Is this whole show fake?”

George Wright VI and Scott Lomu arrived in Ghana $1 million in debt, determined to dig up some of the golden millions that, supposedly, are so plentiful and, in their minds, at least, easy to access. They quickly found that perhaps the ease with which one can become a multi-millionaire in Ghana is overrated, and perhaps more of a fairytale than reality. After spending $150,000 and losing one investor, the two found a second investor who was able to front them a smaller amount--$40,000—but that amount was just enough to get the two in even more trouble, it turned out in the end.

Another Quick-Cash Scheme

What seems to get George and Scott in trouble is their constant scheming to find a shortcut. Get a job? Work hard? Doesn’t seem to be in their game plan. Rather, the two would prefer to find a scheme to get them some quick cash, pay off their debts, and have plenty left over to support what has been, it appears, to be the lucrative lifestyle to which they have become accustomed. Sure, owing a lot of money would lead one, naturally, to look for ways to make a lot of money to pay it back as quickly as possible—but gold mining in Africa?

Perhaps not the best scheme for amateurs to turn quick cash.

Black Market Gold Disaster

Desperate and on the verge of finding themselves back in Utah to face their wives regarding how broke they are now, the two developed another scheme to flip a bar of black-market gold for some serious money. Of course, the plan required them to meet an unknown buyer back in the bush and give him their remaining cash--$35,000—with no guarantee that the gold was even real, or that either of them would make it out of the bush alive. But, again, desperate people will do desperate, crazy, sometimes dumb things, and these two were desperate.

And they did a really dumb thing.

Not only did Scott and George take all $35,000 of their remaining cash into the bush and give it to some unknown guy for a bar of what may or may not have been gold, they found themselves the victim of an armed robbery on their way out—guess it was gold, because those guys wanted it back. Huliq readers have had a lot to say on the subject:

  • Anonymous: "The name for this show is all wrong... it should be called jungle dummies."
  • Anonymous: "Seriously, these guys didn't see this coming? First thing I would have done was switch the gold into a different bag or hid it in the truck (and brought weapons or armed body guards) that's a ton of $...wow, if these guys go back, they'll be killed because they're really not very bright..."
  • Mike Rios: "I would never have stopped for a road block that wasn't there 10 minutes earlier. The only thing these guys know about the criminal element is what they have in a video game at home. They were advertising, 'Please Rob Us.'"
  • HitWhit1: "Either this show is COMPLETELY fake OR these guys are the dumbest bags of pretty-boy hair EVER."

Which hits on another question: How much of this show is fake?

Fact or Fiction?

It seems unlikely that ALL of this show is factual—somebody would be hurt or worse by now, with all that has happened throughout the season. And, the camera crew just follows along behind, whatever the situation, even on a back-bush gold deal gone bad, with no one noticing that they are even there with their cameras and other equipment. But, when it comes down to it, does it really matter how fake it is? As several Huliq readers have pointed out, it still makes for good TV, which viewers must agree with, because the ratings for this show have steadily grown as the season progressed. Although an official announcement has not yet been made by Discovery Channel, there is little doubt that Scott and George will get a shot at a second season, if they are interested—and why wouldn’t they be? As Huliq reader WillyGold pointed out:

Dumb? Clueless? Really?

Watch and learn. Jungle Gold will be back for season 2 because of its record-breaking ratings. These two will get a very lucrative contract from the Discovery Channel. If they take every bit of gold they find in season 2 and flush it down the toilet, they'll still end up as millionaires. The rest of us should be so "dumb" and "clueless".

So, George and Scott are now back in Utah, $300,000 more in debt than they were when they initially arrived in Ghana. But, will they end up as millionaires when it is all said and done? Depends, one would guess, on whether or not their 15 minutes really does reach beyond the small screen into book deals and other opportunities, as contracts for reality “stars” are notoriously minimal. But, it could happen. And, you never know, they could luck into some real gold in Season Two of Jungle Gold. Okay, it’s not likely, but it could happen.

Stay tuned.

They staged the whole robbery so they could bring some money home so they will still wives for season two. That is why the acting seems fake in the last episode, the were acting!

Shame shame Discovery channel. Really, a roadblock! The "robber doesn't even look back at the other vehicle containing the film crew. This whole show is a setup. Discovery channel is a total fake. This show is total scripted fiction.

What initially started out as a potentially interesting show quickly evolved into an agonizingly inept misadventure of two idiots stepping in one pile of elephant dung after another, each with only one pair of shoes to his name. The entire story line was ridiculous. They supposedly became wealthy in real estate, but their fortunes turned upside down because of the market, to the tune of $1 mil. dollars?? So instead of pursuing bankruptcy protection, or finding a profitable niche in the only field they seem to understand (buying and flipping foreclosures) as so many others are now doing, they choose to leave their families for "jungle gold"?? Like I said, they are idiots and their families are unfortunate to be placed in the precarious position they are in. The only people who are dummer than these two are the investors who believed in this pipe dream in the jungle. Or, even worse, those who watched it. I will never watch anything associated with this producer and/or director again. I'd rather have my molars pulled with pliers and no pain killer or gauze with which to blot the bleeding.

Im no base head, but I have done a line or two on occasion and the dark haired guy is definitely high. After a quick review Of their trip through the jungle he even apologizes to his film crew while driving,"sorry guys big bump". LOl...

I have heard many stories of people in debt. But very few have gone to Africa and fail time and time again only to continue to make worse mistakes that got them there in the first place. First of all, if you have a million in debt, perhaps you should get a job in America. There are thousands of jobs that are far less dangerous than risking it all in the jungle. And although none of these jobs will pay back a million in debt, they will bring in a source of income that is constant. Second, relieve yourself of some of your debts. I notice that although these guys are under a wall of debt, they seem to have money for Skype, phone service, their huge homes, and what not. When it comes down to surviving, even selling your house for a loss is better than staying in it. For example, if you have a $500000 house and you sell it for $350000, yes you lose $150,000, but you have reduced your debt for the house by more than half. Thirdly, why fall for one scam after another? Let's go back to the beginning of the show. When they got to Ghana, their claim was being mined by an illegal operation. But instead of seeing this as a sign of troubles to come, they found a new claim, bough t new equipment and struggled and failed. Then instead of going home and trying something more reasonable, they decided to leave that claim and go rock-crushing. They lost more money on equipment. In between, they kept attempting these shady gold deals deeper and deeper in the jungle. Then they tried getting more money from their investor. What? More money to throw down a never-ending black hole? Then they tried this last gold deal and nearly died. For me, the most unbelievable part was when they were driving down a bush road holding a large block of gold in their hands in open view. Then they get out to move a roadblock, leaving the gold as an easy catch for a crook? What were they thinking. And lastly, they said they were going to the police as if the police of a country where illegal mining operations run year round was going to go into the bush and look for a man who was long gone. This is a sad story, but unfortunately, it shows that when you get to a foreign country, you can't use an American mindset. No one works like that over there.

And in the end, they'll walk away with a few million dollars, paid by Discovery Channel, for having agreed to do season two. Is this a bad outcome? If these guys are idiots, I'd be happy to join them. In season 2, I can be the inept bumbling miner who gets gang-raped by gorillas in the Ghana jungle. I'll do this for just $2 million. Maybe even $1.9 if the gorillas are good-looking. Discovery Channel, if you see this, call my agent!

I'd do it for 1.8, kind Sirs!

You attack my intelligence with this show, really staged to the max. How can you run this show thinking we would believe it for one minute. A road block miles from the exchange then someone shoots a shot, walks right up to the vehicle, grabs the backpack( of course) knowing exactly where the chunk of "Gold" was turns and runs into the thick brush..... Why he(the thief ) didn't approach the second vehicle and rob them to is evident that it was a TOTAL SET UP..... I can only sayas one other person commented.... Discovery Channel needs to rethink the series.... It sucked and I will not be made into a fool again.

I have never mined for gold but I could do it better.

looks to me like they knew all along what was going down. I think Scott and George set all of us up and pocketed the 35k. Makes way more sense to me that they set it all up to walk away with the 35k and tell there investor they were robbed. Do u really think a gunman will shoot at them with a van full of cameras pointed at him, or did anyone take a good look at the bar of gold Scott was holding? sure didnt look real to me. These guys are amatuers at nothing there calculating con men and thats just my opinion. In a land drenched in corruption drugs and all sorts of crime, Scott n George seem to be fitting right in

If the MTV show 'Jackass' taught us anything it is that you can do stupid, even self-destructive, things and get paid a lot to do it if you can convince a TV camera crew to follow you. Now Jungle Gold is showing us that you can do well intentioned things foolishly and take irresponsible risks and still make a lot of money with the same proviso. However, make no mistake, this is a train wreck in progress and is likely to end very badly for someone. I feel sorry for their families and their benefactors as these are morons of the highest order.

This show is SO FAKE! I'm embarrassed for these two guys and their wives, Who apparently are on the same common sense level as their husbands. Chasing a dream in a very Dangerous foreign Country. No knowledge of the native language. No pre planning. They Have no qualms about clear cutting acres and acres of jungle land for gold that may or may not be in the ground. And for unknown quantities That may or may not be enough To get them out of debt. I hold The DISCOVERY CHANNEL accountable in aiding these clowns (by funding this show) responsible For the destruction of wildlife jungle habitat for the sake of the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR. Greed is sad. Id expect phone calls home would show poor and gloomy conditions. But these wives are far from the poverty line. These guys would have better Odds In Las Vegas. They all speak English there. There are even 911 lines Available for them to call should the guys get involved with another "masked gunman" robbing them. They could call for help! Discovery better watch out airing crap like this. Smart audiences will stop watching.

This show is completely fake and if its not then these two deserve to get shot for being so stupid, Now I see why they live in Utah because a large crime ridden city like my home of Chi-Town would eat, chew and spit them out for the next predator. George can only yell at trees and try to look bad but he isn't and Scott is such a pansy ass that I'm surprised he made it out of grade school without getting killed... They both deserved everything that they got pls more if it turns out to be real... And why not mine for gold in the plenyfull states that we have right here. I mean damn, Nevada has both silver and gold mines all over its state and then you got a more realistic show called Gold Rush in Alaska... Thay acted like they had a clue on what to do and clearly showed that they didnt. If millions of $$$ were there than everyone there would be rich not walking around with baskets on their heads and to top that off there would be up rising gpoups by rebel groups as well. Come on now this is Africa where its people killed thousands over ivory or the rubber in the trees when it was found and still killing thousands over diomonds... What a joke these two guys are and how bad this show really is. Wont be watching next season, I would rather watch the re-run of Gold Rush

This year at Orycon, Portland Science Fiction Convention, a panel was hosts by one of the participants of the Discovery Channels The Colony. He told how The Discovery Channel hired street thugs to play marauders. This is not something new. The thing is why did the Robers leave the camera crew alone; the cameras are worth something the black market..

Submitted by DMV (not verified) on
The Colony was not pretending to be a reality show you dolt. Guess what, these WAS No apocalypse. Yes, the thugs were actors. Nobody ever said otherwise. The point of the show was to see how the group reacted to a perceived threat. No wonder Discovery is foisting such dreck on us. Apparently many of their viewers can't seem to tell the difference between a reality situation and a simulation.

At the beginning of the season, I figured what the heck, looks entertaining. First off if this is even "real",these guys have gold induced ADD for sure. They are worse than Todd Hoffman on Gold Rush with his "Alaska, second site (forget the lease payment), lose site, move to the Yukon...Let's go prospecting in South fricken America!" Now the two "stars" of this show exemplify the very wost of American Capitalism, over-speculating and got their proverbial bubbles burst. There is more 'non-disclosed' than they are showing. Come on now, flying back and forth from the US to Africa, multiple times?? Keeping their homes(no low-rent districts for either) keeping lights on, families fed...am I the only one doing the math here? There was a time that Discovery actually stood for quality programming and educational shows, remember? Now it's just crack reality TV.

They should just team up with the same guy selling the steroids and straw candy to hook them up with a good graveyard. I'm sure their excavating equipment and rock crushers would do wonders on those coffins. How hard is it to remove gold from teeth anyway? Oh, sorry I should have started this post with SPOILER ALERT. Oh well, now you know what happens in season 2. They do fall shy of their $1,000,000 in gold but make a fortune selling bones to the Chinese.

Yes, stupid people make stupid reality shows and it is entertaining to people with common sense. But doesnt it make you wonder why the two pretty boys were a million dollars in debt already? I would guess that one of the two talked some sucker into some land developement scam when the building boom was huge and then lost their butts. To the question of is the show fake? Well I would say not fake but well scripted because I dont think either one of the two Biffs could did worms out of their backyard let a lone dig gold out of Africa. I guess we will see if I am wrong if they get a season 2. Atleast the Hoffman boys have real american dreams maybe they need to combine the two shows. Hmmm now that would be interesting!

I'm pretty sure those guys are actors. It is a typical "reality show". You got the short stocky blond guy with the quick temper and hot-headed attitude, the tall, square jawed dark haired guy with the level head and soft spoken demeanor, crying over his family. All they need now is the gay guy, a black guy and some chick to round out the cast.

Anyone with half a brain would have rammed the flimsy road block or backed out of there fast. This show also has real bad editing from one show to the next, amateurish. It's disappointing because it's an interesting subject.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
An extremely important thing about this episode that proves the show is fake is right before the road block they are talking to the camera guy and the other crew guy in their jeep, ( they always have people in the jeep with them and another camera crew in a vehicle behind to get the car shots), but once the so called robbery takes place the shows crew is no longer in the vehicle when they go to remove the road block. 1-there's no camera shot from that car and 2- the second car shot clearly shows no one in the car. This was an obvious mistake on the director bc it makes it show that it is all fake. It is entertaining though.

First you need to go to PDAC in Toronto in March. (The Super Bowl of Mining) and learn about the business. Here are just a couple of subects to ask about. Learn what 'salting is'. Because its most likely being done to you to get upfront deposits. Next, buying black market gold can get you in jail for undeclared income to the Ghana government. Next lean about alluvial deposits. Why you dont want to build a gold mine without a resource. I thought Gold Rush was bad....Learn from pros not from cons! You can meet over 30,000 real mining people at PDAC. PLEASE GO FOR YOUR FAMILIES SAKE..But you will be rich from the show as brains is not a requirment in the entertainment industry.

Apparently, the two of them ha a moderately successful season the previous year. Upon arriving at their site and finding it overrun by Chinese claim jumpers, they should have placed a long distance call to Soldier of Fortune magazine and ran a classified ad for 10 Special Forces mercenaries at $10k apiece. This force could not only have elimnated the Chinese presence but also have captured their equipment for George and Scott's operation. Had they done this, they would still be there producing gold.

I'm sorry, if I'm in a 4x4 and I roll up on a roadblock that wasn't there on the way in, but now it is on the way out, I'd have gunned it and jumped the logs. What a stupid, stupid show. If these guys weren't so eager to hustle, they might have been able to settle on something solid and work hard for 6 months to see some payoff. They were looking for a quick buck and felt entitled, so they got their asses handed to them.
