Country superstar Randy Travis was arrested early Monday morning for public intoxication.
According to Denton County jail records, Randy Bruce Travis was arrested on Monday, Feb. 6, and charged with public intoxication. He was, according to the records, “released on citation.” He was arrested outside a North Texas church.
Denton County Sheriff’s spokesman Tom Reedy said that the arresting Sanger Police Department officer spotted a vehicle outside the church early Monday. Upon closer inspection, the officer found an open bottle of wine in the car and Travis, who the officer said smelled of alcohol.
Travis was brought to the Denton County jail at approximately 1:30 a.m., and was released about six hours later.
Travis lives in Tioga, TX, near Sanger.
Travis has issued a statement through his publicist, apologizing for his actions:
“I apologize for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl. I’m committed to being responsible and accountable, and apologize for my actions.”
The incident comes just as Travis’s latest tour is scheduled to kick off in Grand Ronde, OR, on Friday, Feb. 10. The seven-time Grammy award winner and country superstar is celebrating his silver anniversary as one of the music industry’s top-selling artists. More than 30 cities are planned on the tour, including Boise, Denver, Fort Worth and Calgary.
In June 2011, Travis, a Grand Ole Opry member, marked the beginning of 25 years in the music industry with a release of his Anniversary Celebration collection, a 17-track CD with well-known Travis originals, including “More Life,” “Road to Surrender,” He Walked on Water,” and “Forever and Ever, Amen.”
Travis has recorded with Warner Brother Records for most of his career, selling over 20 million units. He has charted 18 #1 singles and 29 Top 10 singles. He’s had one quintuple platinum album (Always and Forever, 1987); one triple platinum (Storms of Life, 1986), two double platinums (Old 8X10, 1988; No Holding Back, 1989); eight platinum albums and 10 gold albums. His career has included seven Grammy Awards; five CMA Awards; 10 ACM Awards; 10 AMA Awards; two People’s Choice Awards; and eight Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association.
Travis, reflecting on his multi-platinum career, which has also included over 40 appearances in television and film, said on his website, "I'm surprised at how fast the first 25 years have gone by. It feels like only five."
