After his death at age 42, the lawsuits began; tonight, the season finale of The Will: Family Secrets Revealed on Investigation Discovery will take a closer look at the estate of former child star Gary Coleman.
When celebrities pass away, the publicity surrounding the death can be overwhelming, particularly when the circumstances involved are questionable, or when the celebrity is of a younger age. The death of Gary Coleman involved both. Tonight’s episode of The Will: Family Secrets Revealed on Investigation Discovery will look at the events surrounding Coleman’s untimely death, as well as the lawsuits and bad blood created when family members and others began making claims to the estate he left behind.
The media came out in force when Coleman’s death was revealed. The former child star had not been a presence on the TV screen for many years, but fans who watched Diff’rent Strokes growing up will never forget Coleman and his catch phrase, “What you talkin’ about?” Interest and questions swirled around the reported accidental death at the young age of 42 on May 28, 2010. People Magazine reported that Coleman died at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah, after being removed from life support. He had been in a coma after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage, USA Today reported, following a fall that resulted in the head injury, according to family members.
Arnold Jackson Remembered
Fans no doubt remember Coleman as Arnold Jackson on Diff’rent Strokes from 1978-86. Coleman reportedly made as much as $100,000 per episode, but media reports claimed that most of his fortune went to others, such as his parents, advisers, lawyers and the IRS, as well. But, Coleman overcame much in his lifetime, including nephritis, a potentially fatal kidney condition that resulted in his small stature of 4’8”. Through the years, the media reported various troubles Coleman faced, many of them to do with money, or his lack of it, and family issues, as well as multiple legal problems that put him in the headlines over the course of his life.
First Love at 40
At age 40, Coleman married 22-year-old Shannon Price. He told People Magazine that she was the first love he had found, saying, "I never got the opportunity to be romantic or feel romantic with anyone," he said. "I wasn't saving myself, she just happened to be the one.” Still, he admitted that the relationship was not perfect, and that they would often argue, and, she said, threw things at each other.
The Lawsuits Begin
Tonight, The Will: Family Secrets Revealed will remember Coleman’s life, and will explore the explosive turmoil that followed his death. According to Investigation Discovery:
One-time child star Gary Coleman dies in 2010, and leaves behind a messy estate plan that pits his former spouse Shannon Price against best friend Anna Gray. The trial uncovers much dirt, and reveals that Coleman's relationships were not what they seemed.
