Kelly Monaco Leaving General Hospital or Just a Casting Call?

Rumors about Kelly Monaco leaving “General Hospital” are running rampant on the Internet after a casting call was recently released by ABC for the role of Sam McCall.

Nobody Kelly Monaco leaving “General Hospital,” especially since her Emmy nomination in 2003. Monaco is also well-known for being the first “Dancing With the Stars” champion. Despite these facts, ABC apparently released a casting call for the role of Sam McCall.

According to SoapCentral, they confirmed a report by Soap Opera Digest that ABC released a casting call for the role of Sam McCall.

The casting call makes it seem Kelly Monaco is leaving “General Hospital” but several co-stars indicate that is not the situation. Past rumors have flown about Monaco leaving the soap, but they were all unsubstantiated. This time, a casting call makes fans feel more concerned about losing her.

The casting call is for an, “early 30s, female, Caucasian, brunette, sexy, dynamic and fiery." The role is for a “series regular” who has been established on the show.

Steve Burton, who plays Jason Morgan, just renewed his contract with the popular daytime soap. He indicated Kelly Monaco was not leaving. Another co-star stated the same thing. According to Nancy Lee Grahn who plays Alexis Davis, Kelly Monaco is not going anywhere.

Currently the rumor mill is working overtime to find out more about this mysterious casting call. Some speculate Monaco might need some time off from GH in the future and the show is seeking a temporary replacement.

Another possibility is the casting call is for another role on GH but it is unclear why an existing cast member's name would be used for it. Fans are considering whether Monaco is looking into another primetime role.

Kelly Monaco has a long history with “General Hospital.” She was the original Samantha McCall, cast in 2003. Prior to her role on GH, Monaco appeared in the spinoff, “Port Charles” in 2000.

Besides her appearance on “Dancing with the Stars,” Monaco appeared in a pilot for the primetime drama, “Football Wives” in 2007. ABC did not pick up the series for the fall lineup. Afterward, Monaco signed another contract with GH. Monaco was also a “Playboy” model.

Monaco was nominated twice for a Daytime Emmy for her work, first in 2003 for Outstanding Supporting Actress on “Port Charles” then in 2006 for Outstanding Lead Actress on GH.

The release of the casting call by ABC could mean many things besides Kelly Monaco leaving the daytime soap, especially with a contract to renew.
At this time, an ABC spokesperson made no comment regarding the recent casting call and Monaco's rep was not available to make a statement.
