With Mother's Day 2012 around the corner, most consumers plan to spend under $100 on gifts. The majority of shoppers are planning to buy flowers for Mother's Day but there are an array of other affordable gifts to choose from.
According to the results from PriceGrabber's 2012 Mother's Day Shopping survey, the majority of consumers intend to spend under $100 for Mother's Day gifts this year. Less than 10 percent will spend more than $250 on Mother's Day presents. The leading gift for Mother's Day is flowers but there are many other budget-conscious choices.
Mother's Day 2012 Spending
PriceGrabber, a part of Experian, conducted the PriceGrabber's 2012 Mother's Day Shopping survey. PriceGrabber is an online shopping site with over 23 million unique shoppers each month. The PriceGrabber survey was conducted from March 26 to April 9, 2012. A total of 4,295 United States online shopping consumers participated in the survey.
According to the results, 62 percent of Mother's Day shoppers will spend less than $100 on gifts with 20 percent planning to spend between $100 and $249 on presents. Just 8 percent intend to spend over $250 and 10 percent said they do not have a budget for shopping for Mother's Day presents this year. The survey reported 50 percent of consumers plan to spend the same on gifts as last year.
The top gift selection for Mother's Day 2012 is flowers, a traditional choice for the holiday. A total of 43 percent of consumers plan to buy flowers with 22 percent getting gift cards and 17 percent buying accessories and clothing for the special mothers in their lives.
Jewelry remains on the list for Mother's Day for 15 percent of shoppers. Another 15 percent are choosing a gift such as a dinner, show or vacation. Just 13 percent of shoppers will buy tech gifts for Mother's Day such as a smartphone, tablet or computer. Of those purchasing tech items, 51 percent will opt for a tablet, 22 percent will get a smartphone, 15 percent will buy a computer and 15 percent an e-reader.
According to a press release, general manager of PriceGrabber, Graham Jones, said, “PriceGrabber anticipates that shoppers will seek out the perfect gift for under $100 this year and keep it traditional with flowers, gift cards and clothing.”
Graham continued to state most shoppers planned to honor mothers with flowers this year according to the survey data. He indicated it was not surprising to see that tablet computers are a top choice among tech gifts because they have become one of the most top-searched items on PriceGrabber this year.
How Consumers Will Shop for Mother's Day
More than half of consumers will buy Mother's Day gifts online, with many enticed by offers of free shipping. A total of 52 percent of shoppers will get Mother's Day gifts from online stores through their computers. Brick-and-mortar stores are attracting 43 percent of shoppers with 5 percent buying online through mobile devices.
The biggest lure for Mother's Day shoppers is free shipping followed by price cuts and coupons. A quarter of shoppers stated they would not be influenced by any retailer tactics.
The majority of shoppers intend to buy Mother's Day gifts a week before the holiday on Sunday, May 13. A total of 30 percent of consumers will shop a week before with 27 percent buying two weeks in advance and 13 percent shopping at last-minute. A total of 12 percent will buy gifts three weeks before the big day.
With online shopping on the rise, 29 percent of shoppers will turn to daily deal sites to get discounts on popular gifts such as spa packages, restaurant meals or entertainment. Cheap and Unique Mother's Day Gift Ideas
Buyers on a budget might want to make their own gifts or put together an inexpensive present for Mother's Day. Dollar stores such as Family Dollar sell a variety of mom-friendly items such as bath soaps, umbrellas, cosmetics, pens, stationery, clothing, candles and silk flowers. They also have bags, baskets and cards to put together an entire gift package for under $10.
Making breakfast or sweet treats is another way to show mom she is special without breaking the bank. A welcome gift for many busy moms is offering to do chores. Put together a booklet of coupons for mom to cash in as she needs things done to give her a much-needed break.
