Willie Nelson 2012 tour dates in major cities throughout the U.S. prove this legendary country singer is still going strong. Nelson's recent rendition of Coldplay's “The Scientist" in an ad for Chipotle shows his ongoing support of farming in America.
Still going strong at 78, Willie Nelson 2012 tour dates are scheduled throughout the U.S. starting on March 3 and wrapping up on June 8. Recently Nelson caused a buzz in with a commercial for Chipotle with his rendition of Coldplay's “The Scientist.”
Willie Nelson Performs Rendition of “The Scientist” by Coldplay
Some fans are wondering if Willie Nelson does Coldplay better than Coldplay themselves after Nelson's recent rendition of “The Scientist.” The Washington Post reported an overly long performance by Coldplay at the Grammy Awards last Sunday was followed by “The Scientist” covered by Nelson in an ad for Chipotle. Watch a video of the Nelson cover of “The Scientist” below to compare.
The commercial made its debut last August. However, the contrast between the original by Coldplay and Nelson's rendition became obvious when the ad was aired after the band's Grammy performance. The proceeds of the song benefit the Chiptole Cultivate Foundation. The commercial is about two minutes long and highlights the Chipotle's sustainable farming practices.
The short film by Johnny Kelly for Chipotle is entitled, "Back to the Start." Willie Nelson's cover of “The Scientist” for Chipotle can be downloaded on iTunes.
Willie Nelson Supports Sustainable Farming
It's no surprise to fans of Willie Nelson that the country singer supports farming. In 2011, Nelson was inducted to the National Agricultural Hall of Fame for his labor in fundraisers to benefit farmers including Farm Aid.
In 1985, Farm Aid was started in Illinois to raise funds for family farmers in the U.S. Concert organizers included Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp. The project was also spurred by statements made by Bob Dylan at Live Aid that he hoped some money would help farmers in America who were in danger of losing their farms due to mortgage debt.
The first Farm Aid concert was held at the University of Illinois Memorial Stadium in Champaign. A crowd of about 80,000 people attended the event in September, 1985. Performers included Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel and B.B. King. The first concert raised more than $9 million for family farmers in America.
Nelson and Mellencamp also helped family farmers by bringing them before Congress to testify about the state of family farming. To help save American family farms from foreclosure, the Agricultural Credit Act of 1987 was then passed.
Farm Aid continues today to increase awareness about the relevance of family farms in the United Staets. The distinguished board of directors includes Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews. Every year the organization puts on a country, rock and blues music concert with an array of notable stars.
Farm Aid 2012 will include performances by Nelson, Young, Mellencamp and Matthews. On the Farm Aid website, Neil Young states, ““Just as rock & roll is loud and proud, so is Farm Aid. Farm Aid's greatest accomplishment, I believe, is in the spirit. It's the fact that we represent the spirit of the good fight, to keep something good happening. It just keeps getting stronger and stronger....”
