Five ways to get the most out of your Internet Channel

Follow us on Twitter

You probably know that you can connect your Wii to the Internet and use it to access all sorts of fantastic online content. You can find out heaps of game information and play demos on the Nintendo Channel, download new and classic games on the Wii Shop Channel and get competitive with your imagination on the Mii Channel.

But there is also a dedicated Internet Channel that allows you to access the entire internet from your sofa. It’s a great way to get interactive with your family and friends and we’ve come up with a list of our five favourite ways to make the most of what’s on offer!

Sporting Tips
So, it’s the last match of the season and your team is teetering perilously close to the relegation zone. You and your mates are glued to the game, but you need to know the results of the other matches being played to assess your team’s survival chances. You can use the Internet Channel on your Wii to check any details instantly, meaning virtually no interruption to your match-watching experience. Save the relevant scores website (or any other website) to your Favourites by clicking the star at the bottom of your screen and then ‘Add to Favourites‘ on the next screen. It’s now saved in Favourites and takes just one click to access the site.

We’re all going on a Summer Holiday
One of the great advantages of the Wii Internet Channel is that because it’s viewed from your television, you’re not subject to the usual squash as a bunch of you try to squeeze in front of the computer screen. This means that activities such as internet shopping or even booking holidays can be much more of a shared experience. You can all check out destinations and hotels together and come to a collaborative decision without the usual hassle of sending endless links and taking part in five-way conversations.

Wiideo killed the radio star
Did you know that the Wii has the ability to play thousands of videos? Everyone loves a good YouTube video and some of the funniest things you’ll see can be found on this cult website. You don’t need to do anything special to watch videos on the Internet Channel. Simply type in the website URL or browse to the media you want to watch. If the video is compatible with Flash 7, it will load and play for you on your TV. You can then use the + and - Buttons on the Wii Remote to zoom in or zoom out of the video.

On the tip of your tongue
You know when you’re watching a film and you recognise an actor but you can’t place where from? Or you love the soundtrack and want to know who it’s by? You can find the answers by flicking to your Wii on the TV in the commercial break and navigating to your favourite information website. There’s nothing like satisfying that “tip of your tongue” moment quickly, especially if it’ll settle a friendly dispute in your favour!

Share the Experience…with yourself!
You can even use the Internet Channel to share with yourself, which sounds like a rather strange concept, but is actually straightforward. This method lets you send links from your email address to your Wii and vice versa. Just register your email address in the Wii Address Book, under ‘Others‘. Your Wii will send a registration email to your email address and you just need to reply to activate the link. Et voila! - there’s total communication between your favourite machines! Now you can send an email to your Wii and see it on the Wii Message Board. Just click the link and the Internet Channel will automatically start and open the page. Of course, you can also do the reverse and send a link from your Wii back to your home computer. You do this by clicking on the Page Information icon in the tool bar and then on the Send link icon.

We’re sure you’ll come up with lots of other great uses for the Internet Channel – and it won’t be long before it’s a familiar friend. The Internet Channel can be downloaded for just 500 Wii Points.
