Turkey to Inspect Jerusalem Holy Site

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says a Turkish technical team will inspect controversial construction underway near a Jerusalem holy site.

Mr. Erdogan spoke at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Thursday in Ankara.

Mr. Olmert stated that Israel has "nothing to hide" about the work being done at the compound known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. He presented photos of the repair work on an entry ramp and archaeological excavations, which he said is taking place outside the compound area.

A clash between Israeli police and Muslim worshippers at the site last Friday prompted sharp criticism from Turkish leaders.

Mr. Olmert also said Thursday that Israel wants to make peace with Syria as long as it stops supporting terrorism and, in his words, abides by the rules set by the international community.

The Israeli prime minister on Wednesday began a two-day visit to Turkey where he has also discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iran's nuclear program.

In remarks published in Turkey's Milliyet newspaper, Mr. Olmert said tougher economic sanctions would force Iran to "review" its nuclear program. - VOA News
