Konwitschny's Lohengrin a sweeping success
Peter Konwitschny's celebrated classroom Lohengrin from Hamburg has now reached Copenhagen. The performance has been enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. Among the highlighted performers are Wagner veterans Stig Andersen and Inga Nielsen, who alternate with two younger singers, namely Johnny van Hal and Ann Petersen. The performance will run until 16 March.
Anne Sofie von Otter misses Mélisande
Anne Sofie von Otter has regretfully cancelled her appearance in Pelléas et Mélisande due to a knee injury. Replacing her in the title role in all performances is the young and very talented Swedish mezzo-soprano Elisabeth Jansson. The production is directed by Guy Joosten and set designs are by Johannes Leiacker. American maestro Karen Kamensek will conduct the performance. This new production of Pelléas et Mélisande will be staged from 25 February to 31 March 2007.
European Opera Days 2007
The Royal Danish Opera joins a great many other European opera companies in hosting the annual open house event European Opera Days, which is scheduled for the weekend of 17 and 18 February. Here audiences will experience open rehearsals of The Secret Songs and view excerpts from the upcoming DVD release of The Copenhagen Ring among many other things.
Věc Makropulos at the Mariinsky Theatre
The Royal Danish Opera's critically acclaimed production of JanáÄÂek's VÄ›c Makropulos, staged by Graham Vick, has caused international sensation. Chief conductor and Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Valery Gergiev, has contracted the production to be staged at the Mariinsky Theatre.
Johnny van Hal among the Met's most valuable players 2006
The Metropolitan Opera Guild names Johnny van Hal as one of opera's most valuable players in their 2006 Best of the Year Awards for his lead part in the recording of Poul Ruders' Kafka's Trial.
Lars Ulrik Mortensen receives The Léonie Sonning Music Prize 2007
This year's recipient of The Léonie Sonning Music Prize is conductor and harpsichordist Lars Ulrik Mortensen. At the award concert Lars Ulrik Mortensen will perform with the period music ensemble Concerto Copenhagen. He will both conduct and appear as a soloist in works by, among others, Handel and Rameau. The concert will take place at the Old Stage on 2 June 2007.
New production of Simon Boccanegra
The Bosnian-Swedish director Jasenko Selimovic lets Verdi's opera Simon Boccanegra take place in Eastern Europe, spanning most of the 20th century. Michael Schønwandt will alternate with Pier Giorgio Morandi on the conductor's podium, and in the title role Johan Reuter will alternate with Per Høyer.
